Death Valley Dethrones Impostor As Hottest Place On Earth

Well, I visited some African country that lies straight on the Equautor. As an individual from the west, I arrived with my prejudices that this country would be nautrally hotter than my home land.

I was wrong! The temperature, right at the equator was no more than 28 degrees celcius (82.4 degrees F). I was suprised. The locals told me it had to do with their altitude, which is much higher.

When I called my family, they had sympathy for the "hot weather". My repeated advice to them that my homeland (Texas) wa

Impact Investing, Naturally | Bonnie Foley-Wong

Are we hardwired to make impact investing impossible? That is the question posed by Ben Metz on the Pioneers Post. In my response to what motivates us to invest for positive impact, we must consider the following: what does impact mean to each of us, what is the purpose of money and monetary rewards, and how we make decisions.

Impact is Personal

I believe impact is fair and equitable access to resources for all. By resources, I include food, clean water, shelter, education, information, energy, transportation ? anything that is a resource that enables people to do the things they need to do to have a thriving, fulfilling life. More specifically, the things that had the most significant impact in my life were access to education (specifically deep literacy in financial matters), guidance from people who identified and supported potential, not just performance, and being in careers where building relationships was a daily necessity. It is no coincidence that the social venture I have created is focused on investing in earlier stage entrepreneurs with potential, building a community of investors and increasing investment literacy, and building relationships between investors and entrepreneurs. I support and serve women investors because I believe growing the community of women investors will have the most positive impact and knock-on effect on the world.

Ask a handful of people what they believe ?impact? is and get a handful of different answers. Impact is personal. It depends upon personal experiences. What someone experienced in their life will influence what they believe is impact. Just take a look at how organizations and businesses are often formed. Many are solutions to problems or challenges faced by the founders themselves. Founders create impact based on their personal experience of what would have greatest impact.

In his post, Ben writes that ?introducing the promise of monetary reward can actually reduce the motivation to do good ? and throwing more money at the problem doesn?t yield proportionate returns.?

The issue is not ?doing good and pursuing monetary reward, where one competes against the other?. It is most definitely not about one as motivation for the other. They are distinct, but complementary goals and desires. Each has its own motivation and each yields its own, complementary outcome.

The promise of monetary reward triggers an analytical part of the brain, potentially motivating a person to maximize monetary reward. However, to increase the motivation to do good, we must consider the key influencers of decisions to do good, such as feelings of fulfilment, contentment, joy, and love. For each person, these key influencers to do good are going to be different and personal.

Ben notes a study in 2000, where researchers offered subjects the opportunity to earn money for a charity at varying levels of financial reward. The study shows that monetary rewards alone do not motivate good acts. Feelings of creating fairness, emotional drivers, physiological conditions, and mindset all could have influenced the decisions to generate more money for the charity or not. How motivated each subject was to generate more money for the charity would have been influenced by their personal experiences.

The Purpose of Money and Monetary Rewards

The connection between the study?s subjects earning money for themselves and impact investing is that in order for doing good or doing purposeful work to be ongoing, it must be economically viable. To be economically viable, we must also earn money. More accurately, we must continually produce, generate, recycle, and reuse resources in order to sustain ourselves ? money happens to be the measure and currency of those resources.

It gets even more complicated and interesting. Money and monetary rewards are not themselves motivators. Instead, I believe it is the purpose of money that motivates people. Dougald Hine gave a great presentation on the purpose of money, in which he describes five main purposes:

  • Subsistence ? a means to stay alive or sustain one?s self
  • Security ? a means to manage your future, to make the world less unpredictable
  • Luxury ? if something is a luxury, then you?re not dependent upon it
  • Status ? games by which people establish, hold onto, and change status
  • Accumulation ? the idea that more is in and of itself better

Relating the above to investing, the purpose of money or more specifically the purpose of a financial return is:

  • to create an income to sustain one?s self or others
  • to grow financial reserves in order to manage the future or manage change or be re-invested in other ventures and projects
  • for luxury, if investing is not one?s main source of income
  • for status as a successful investor
  • simply as a way of keeping score, if you treat investing as a game

Integrated Decision-Making

Impact investing is a complex decision-making experience. We seek multiple outcomes from an impact investment ? economic viability and positive impact in the unknown and uncertain future. To achieve these multiple outcomes, we require multiple inputs into the decision-making experience or process.

We all make decisions using analysis, emotion, intuition, and body. Reflect upon the biggest decisions you have made in your life ? choosing a college, university or course to further your education, choosing a career path, or choosing in what city in the world to live. All of these decisions are similar to those faced in impact investing ? they each come with different monetary implications and each may have impact. There is a high likelihood that you conducted some analysis and reflected upon the emotions you felt given your choices. Your physiological state and a dose of intuition likely would have affected your decision. I suspect monetary reward alone would not have been a sufficient motivator where impact is important to you.

?

These ideas, concepts, and approaches ? that impact is personal, the purpose of money and investing, and integrated investment decision-making ? will be discussed further in the book I am writing on investing in an integrated way. Chapter excerpts will be posted on this website throughout early 2013.

As winter storm bears down on Midwest, death toll climbs

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -- A powerful storm system that erupted Christmas Day with Gulf Coast tornadoes and snow in the nation's midsection headed for the Northeast on Wednesday, spreading blizzard conditions that slowed holiday travel.

The death toll rose to six with car accidents on snow and sleet-slickened highways in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Post-Christmas travelers braced for flight delays and a raft of weather warnings for drivers, a day after rare winter twisters damaged buildings in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Snow blew across southern Illinois and southern Indiana early Wednesday as the storm tracked up the Ohio River valley toward the Eastern seaboard and New England.

There were whiteout conditions in parts of southwestern Indiana, where 6 inches or more of snow had fallen by midmorning around Evansville. State police reported dozens of vehicles stuck after not being able to get up a hill on a central Indiana highway, while some roads around Evansville were impassable with wind gusts around 30 mph.

A blizzard warning was in effect for much of the state's southern two-thirds and more than a dozen counties issued travel watches asking residents to make only essential driving trips.

Indianapolis had 7 inches on the ground by 10 a.m. after receiving as much as 3 inches of snow in a single hour, said John Kwiatkowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. He said the storm's winds were just high enough to classify the storm as a blizzard, making it one of the strongest snowstorms in years to strike central and southern Indiana.

"The way I've been describing it is as a low-end blizzard, but that's sort of like saying a small Tyrannosaurus rex. Just to become a blizzard is quite an accomplishment. And it's sure a heck of a lot more than we've seen," he said.

In Arkansas, the storm left more than 189,000 customers without electricity Wednesday, utility Entergy Arkansas said.

Severe thunderstorms were forecast for the Carolinas while a line of blizzard and winter storm warnings stretched from Arkansas up the Ohio River to New York and on to Maine.

State police reported scores of accidents on snow-covered highways in central and western Maryland, where forecasters predicted up to 5 inches of snow in most counties west of the Baltimore-Washington area, followed by freezing rain.

Thirty-four tornadoes were reported in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama during the outbreak Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Rick Cauley's family was hosting relatives for Christmas when tornado sirens went off in Mobile. Not taking any chances, he and his wife, Ashley, hustled everyone down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile's Murphy High School in Mobile.

It turns out, that wasn't the place to head.

"As luck would have it, that's where the tornado hit," Cauley said. "The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second." They were all fine, though the school was damaged, as were a church and several homes, but officials say no one was seriously injured.

Camera footage captured the approach of the large funnel cloud.

Mobile was the biggest city hit by numerous twisters. Along with brutal, straight-line winds, the storms knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Torrential rains drenched the region and several places saw flash flooding.

More than 900 flights around the U.S. were canceled as of Wednesday midday, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. The cancelations were mostly spread around airports that had been or soon would be in the path of the storm.

Holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fast-moving storms. In Arkansas, highway department officials said the state was fortunate the snowstorm hit on Christmas Day when many travelers were already at their destinations.

Two passengers in a car on a sleet-slickened Arkansas highway died Wednesday when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck an SUV head-on. In Oklahoma, the Highway Patrol said a 76-year-old Wisconsin woman died Tuesday when the car she was riding in was hit head-on by a pickup truck on Interstate 44.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol had earlier reported that a 28-year-old woman was killed in another crash Tuesday on a snowy highway. The storm's winds were blamed Tuesday for toppling a tree onto a pickup truck in Texas, killing the driver, and another tree onto a house in Louisiana, killing a man there.

Trees fell on homes and across roadways in several communities in southern Mississippi and Louisiana. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency, saying eight counties reported damages and some injuries.

It included McNeill, where a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.

The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity for a time.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power for at least a time in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky up to Cleveland with predictions of several inches to a foot of snow. By the end of the week, that snow was expected to move into the Northeast with again up to a foot predicted

Jason Gerth said the Mobile tornado passed by in a few moments and from his porch, he saw about a half-dozen green flashes in the distance as transformers blew. His home was spared.

"It missed us by 100 feet and we have no damage," Gerth said.

Why Apple Could Launch iPad 5 In March Next Year ?

Apple?s current CEO?Tim Cook?is considered as one of the most efficient?administrators in?supply chain management. This time, he has been nominated as most powerful person in the U.S. wireless industry space as well. Undoubtedly, the CEO has brought the company to peak?which is currently sitting at hoard of cash. Being the CEO, Tim Cook has continuously been refreshing its all product lineups, and this time, we could easily see a slew of Apple?s revamped products in the market. On the other hand, the company?s former CEO?Steve Jobs? differentiated the company (compare to other technology companies) through visionary products. He believed that an innovative product would be a?pillar of success for any technology company.

But, Tim Cook wants to differentiate Apple by premium products. This is the reason why he is continuously refreshing the company?s products lineups.?However, the strategy has been successful so far, and it?s probably better in sense that people don?t feel like they should wait for a long time to get their hand on the company?s new products such as a new iPad and iPhone.

According to a Japanese site Macotakara, Apple could launch a bigger iPad (say fifth generation iPad) as soon as in March next year. The fifth generation iPad is expected to be more like the iPad Mini, a thinner and lighter Tablet. Apple just released its fourth generation iPad in October this year, and now, there?s a buzz around about iPad 5.

However, it?s also said that the internal of iPad 5 will be similar to its predecessor (iPad 4). The new iPad (iPad 5) will feature 4 mm, 17 mm and 2 mm smaller in height, width and depth than the current models. Of course, the company is trying to put?pedal to the metal by launching out new iPad updates in every six months. The company is endeavoring to make sure that Samsung,?Microsoft, Google and Amazon could not catch up in the Tablet market.

iPad 5 image leaked

Six month ahead since the launch of iPad 3, Apple launched fourth iteration of its iPad (iPad 4), which is virtually identical to the iPad 3 except the processor. The processor in iPad 3 has been bumped up to an A6X, which is claimed twice as fast as the A5X processor found in the iPad 3. Apparently, the company?s iPad 4 launch surprised everyone in October this year.

Apple is currently facing fierce competition from Microsoft?s new Surface Tablet. The Tablet (Surface) is expected to reach 1 million units figure by the end of this year. Although, the figure is quite low compare to the unit shipments of iPads in Q4 this year, but it could be threat for Apple?s iPad business. In other words, if Microsoft?s Surface Tablet does succeed to grab the attention of consumers and businesses, it would definitely be a risk to Apple?s Tablet shipments. It might be one of the reasons why Apple could launch its fifth generation iPad soon.

In addition to this, Apple could also implement ?GF DITO? touchscreen technology in next iteration of Tablet with more power-efficient chips. The technology would help the company to make the product 23% thinner and 53% lighter than its predecessors (full-size iPad).?In the past, the company?s product launches were distributed across the year. But this time, the company is more intent to launch the products (especially mobile products) periodically in very short span of time.

YPF, Chevron sign Argentina petroleum pact

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Argentina's cash-strapped state energy company signed a partnership deal Wednesday with Chevron Corp. for a "massive development" of the South American country's vast nonconventional oil and gas resources.

YPF President Miguel Galuccio and Chevron's Latin America and Africa chief, Ali Moshiri, signed a letter of intent to start on a shale pilot project by drilling more than 100 wells within 12 months in the Vaca Muerta area of Patagonia. YPF hopes the effort will help it boost production to meet Argentina's growing energy demands.

The companies said the pilot project will cost a shared $1 billion, while it could take more than $15 billion for full development of the Vaca Muerta ("Dead Cow") formation that was discovered in Neuquen province in 2010.

Argentina expropriated a majority stake in YPF from Spain's Grupo Repsol in April after accusing the Spanish company of bleeding YPF dry and forcing Argentina to import record amounts of energy by failing to invest in Argentine operations.

Galuccio, who was picked by President Cristina Fernandez to lead YPF shortly after the company was nationalized, said he was delighted by the agreement with Chevron. Since taking charge, Galuccio had insisted on the need for YPF to find wealthy partners willing to make long-term bets on developing Argentina's energy potential.

The preliminary accord is key to YPF's plans to develop what experts believe are the third-largest shale resources in the world and boost the company's output, which dwindled under the control of Repsol.

Argentina needs billions of dollars to exploit its energy reserves, and until now major oil companies had failed to commit. Analysts blamed the government's heavy hand in the market and Repsol's threat to sue any partner for the $10 billion investment that Argentina seized when it took over YPF.

"YPF is top-notch when it comes to technology and human resources," Chevron's Moshiri told reporters in Buenos Aires via a teleconference.

"The issue will be how big the investment will be beyond the pilot," Moshiri said, adding that the companies plan to begin work as soon as possible.

He said the partnership will serve as a foundation for the development of nonconventional oil and natural gas resources and other interesting investments in Argentina.

Boehner: Obama should support fiscal cliff plan

(AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner says President Barack Obama should support a Republican plan to avoid January tax increases on everyone but those earning over $1 million. Boehner says if Obama doesn't support the measure, the president will be responsible for what he calls "the largest tax increase in American history."

Boehner spoke to reporters Wednesday at the Capitol after Obama said he believed a deal with the speaker was close to avoid the "fiscal cliff" ? huge tax boosts and spending cuts taking effect in January unless lawmakers head them off.

Obama and Boehner have yet to produce a compromise. Boehner plans a House vote Thursday on his Plan B ? which would head off most of the tax increases. The White House says Obama would veto that measure.

Chained CPI Plan 'A Stealth Way To Give People Less' Says Keith Ellison, Minnesota Congressman (VIDEO)

Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison (Minn.) said Tuesday that one part of a potential deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" is actually "a stealth way to give people less" and that he and other members of the House Progressive Caucus won't vote for any plan that includes it.

"It's a bad idea and it's a stealth way to give people less," Ellison told HuffPost Live host Alyona Minkovski. "And, so we're saying we're not gonna do it. It is a benefit cut -- and here's the real problem with it being a benefit cut: It would be absolutely horrible if it were a benefit cut but the cut was designed to extend the life of Social Security and to make the program more solvent. But that's not why they're doing it. They're doing it so that they can preserve somebody else to have a tax cut and to not raise taxes on the top 2 percent."

One of the details to emerge out of the ongoing budget negotiations between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is the possibility of changing the way the government measures inflation in order to reduce spending by giving smaller cost-of-living adjustments to beneficiaries of Social Security and other programs. If adopted, the new system would use the "chained" consumer price index to measure inflation as opposed to the regular CPI used now.

The Huffington Post's Arthur Delaney explains the chained CPI:

Many economists say the alternative version of the Consumer Price Index, known as the "chained CPI," is a more accurate measure of inflation. Chained CPI accounts for the way consumers avoid higher prices by substituting purchases. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has a favorite example: "If the price of pork increases while the price of beef does not, consumers might shift away from pork to beef."

Obama has not ruled out the possibility of the change, but some Democrats have said they won't vote for any budget plan that includes reductions to Social Security benefits.

Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowle, co-chairs of the Obama administration's commision on deficit reduction, proposed a switch to chained CPI in 2010 coupled with new protections for low-income and older seniors.

Japan seeks a real leader after 7 PMs in 6 years

Shizuo Kambayashi / AP, file

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, fifth from right, of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, poses with nine other leaders of political parties after a debate last month.

By Arata Yamamoto, NBC News

TOKYO - Kazuyoshi Enokido has lost faith in traditional Japanese politics.

"I'm placing my bet on something new because there's no hope with existing parties," the salesman told NBC News as he finished submitting an early ballot ahead of Japan's election, which is scheduled for Sunday.

"Even if it means being a bit more aggressive, I would like to see someone who can pull everyone up and exert his leadership skills," said Enokido, as he stood with his wife and one-year-old child in Tokyo's Ginza District.

Voters in Japan are witnessing one of the most complex and confusing general elections in the country's history. A total of 11 political parties, most of them formed within the past year or two, are vying for parliamentary seats.

Yoshihiko Noda, 55, is Japan's seventh prime minister since 2006. And if polls are accurate, another leadership change looms. Not everyone is happy about that prospect.

"In my honest opinion, I don't know why we have to keep changing our leaders," Hiroma Shindo, 22, told NBC News. "There's no way anyone can produce any results in just two or three years."

Most of the groups vying for power are splinters from the two main parties ? the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and the?Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has held power in Japan for most of the post-war period. Their familiar faces make it that much more difficult for voters to distinguish each individual party's position on key issues.

Citing surveys, Reuters reported Friday that?between 30 percent and nearly 50 percent of voters were undecided with just days to go.

Franck Robichon / EPA

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda waves to voters after an election campaign speech in Tokyo on Thursday.

"I can't decide. It's hard to know exactly what we're voting for," said Hiroko Takahashi, a 51-year-old part-time worker from Machida, a city west of Tokyo, told The Associated Press.

The challenges faced by the country ? the world's third-largest economy and one of the United States' most important allies ? are formidable.

"This time around the voters are concerned about one single simple issue, which can be called 'security'," said Tomohiko Taniguchi, former spokesman for the foreign affairs ministry who now teaches at Tokyo's Keio University.

More Japan coverage from NBC News

Security covers a lot of ground.

"Job and economic security," he said. "Secondly, nuclear security. And thirdly national security. And what is complex is, these three 'securities' are not necessarily compartmentalized. They are mutually interrelated."

More than 20 years after its "miracle economy" bubble burst, Japan seems trapped in a vicious circle of sinking prices and weak demand as sluggish growth forces businesses to slash prices and frugal-minded consumers put off spending.

There does seem to be some agreement among the parties when it comes to the economy, Taniguchi said.

"Economic security is the one that overlaps party boundaries," he added. "There is little difference if you look at the platforms of LDP and DPJ. There is little difference between them and other parties are pushing similar agendas."

None of the parties would disagree that Japan needs to wean itself from its dependence on nuclear power after last year's Fukushima disaster, while at the same time, securing a stable source of power.

"Unlike the past two (lower house) elections, the main points of contention are not so clear and in that sense, it is hard for voters to understand," said Yukio Maeda, a political science professor at the University of Tokyo.

With the exception of the Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party, the majority of the political factions also acknowledge Japan's need to rebuild its diplomatic strength by restoring its alliance with the United States.

Relations deteriorated over the handling of a bilateral agreement to relocate a controversial key U.S. airbase on Okinawa Island, a situation made even more acute because of the contentious territorial dispute with China over a group of islands in the East China Sea.

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in troubled China Seas

Opinion polls by the Asahi, Yomiuri and Nikkei newspapers on Thursday predicted that the LDP was?on track for a stunning victory in the election, with hawkish former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returning to power. They?forecast that the LDP was headed for a hefty majority in the powerful?lower house of parliament.

Abe abruptly resigned in 2007 for health reasons after leading the country for just a year.

Shinzo Abe, a former prime minister who is currently leader of Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, waves to supporters from his car on Thursday.

Reuters reported that the polls suggested the LDP and its smaller ally, the New Komeito party, could even gain the two-thirds majority needed to break through a policy deadlock that has plagued the country since 2007.

If no single party wins the majority in the 480-seat lower house, a coalition government would be formed. With so many fledgling parties, a few, no matter how tiny, may end up wielding considerable clout, getting wooed to join a coalition government.

The new party with the most momentum -- and one that could be part of the coalition government -- is the Japan Restoration Party, led by Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara and Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, who have been pushing for a more assertive Japan capable of flexing its military muscle in territorial disputes with China.

Taniguchi said one thing appears certain: Japanese voters desire "a government that could stay long in power."

At Tokyo's Shimbashi Station on Friday, one retiree agreed with that assessment -- warning that political instability was damaging Japan's international reputation.

"The way our leaders come and go, it's too frequent," said the 66-year-old woman, who only gave her name as Ms. Itoh. "The world will stop paying attention to us."

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Hard-to-treat Myc-driven cancers may be susceptible to drug already used in clinic

Dec. 14, 2012 ? Drugs that are used in the clinic to treat some forms of breast and kidney cancer and that work by inhibiting the signaling molecule mTORC1 might have utility in treating some of the more than 15 percent of human cancers driven by alterations in the Myc gene, according to data from a preclinical study published in Cancer Discovery, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

"More than 1 million people diagnosed with cancer each year have a tumor driven by alterations in the Myc gene," said Grant A. McArthur, M.D., Ph.D., professor of translational research at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. "However, it has proven impossible to develop drugs that effectively target Myc.

"One of Myc's functions is to regulate cell growth. Because mTORC1 is also a regulator of cell growth, we hypothesized that inhibiting mTORC1 with the drug everolimus might suppress Myc-driven tumor initiation and growth."

McArthur and his colleagues tested their hypothesis in a mouse model of Myc-driven lymphoma and found that treatment with everolimus provided strong protection against disease: only four of 33 mice treated with everolimus developed lymphoma, while 22 of 34 mice treated with placebo developed the disease.

In addition, treatment with everolimus led to tumor regression and significantly improved survival compared with placebo in mice with established lymphomas. However, all of these mice eventually relapsed as a result of the growth of lymphoma cells resistant to the effects of everolimus.

"These data confirmed our hypothesis that mTORC1 inhibition could suppress Myc-driven tumor initiation and growth," said McArthur. "The surprise was found in how mTORC1 inhibition led to tumor regression. We had expected that it would trigger cancer cells to die by a cellular process known as apoptosis, but we found that this was not the case."

Detailed analysis of the tumors indicated that everolimus caused tumor regression by inducing cellular senescence.

According to McArthur, normal cells protect themselves when cancer-driving genes are switched on is by entering a state called senescence. When cancers develop, they have found ways to overcome this safeguard. "Our data indicate that one way in which cancers bypass senescence, in particular senescence induced by Myc, is through a signaling pathway involving mTORC1," he said.

Resistance to everolimus treatment in mice with established lymphomas was associated with loss of the function of p53, a protein known to help suppress tumor formation and growth.

"The loss of effectiveness of everolimus therapy against lymphoma cells deficient in p53 function has important clinical implications," said McArthur. "Everolimus could be a useful new string to the bow for clinicians treating patients with Myc-driven cancers, in particular B cell lymphomas, but that it would be helpful only to those patients with functional p53."

View all articles by Mark Paul There is a very strong reason behind the popularity of backup devices and even ill today there are many people who completely ignore the idea of having backup technology in their everyday use. The consequences of ignoring this can be disastrous. As we all know that computers have become such an important part of our everyday lifestyle, it is important to realize what the dark side of this can be. Being so dependent on the computer has transformed our lives into some sort of a blessing but at the same time it is not a good position to be in. without backups, working on a computer system can never be risk free.

Your data is a very important thing and therefore, it requires protection. Data can be harmed in many ways and there are many ways in which data can be lost forever. Data corruption can be the result of hacking or malicious software. Sometimes, when the computer system breaks down, your data is not recovered fully and as result you lose your data forever. Imagine what such a thing would be like for a business or an organization which is completely dependent on the computer systems and inside these systems there is tons of crucial data stored.

Backing up data has been made almost a necessity for all businesses; without backups they won?t have any backbone. There are? huge amounts of data which are used in the daily operations of businesses and in today?s world almost every other business is based on computerized systems. Losing data in such an event can mean a loss of millions to businesses. For such purposes, the backup technology has evolved incredible, transforming means of backup to a convenient and affordable level.

Tape drives have been used predominantly by businesses and they serve the purpose of backing up of data just perfectly. Tape drives allow users to write and read off data and this data is stored on a magnetic tape. This data can be accessed whenever it is required in the future. Talking about tape drives, Quantum DDS-5 is one of the best of its types.

The DDS technology is the very famous technology which promises enhanced quality and performance during backup processes. And when making a decision regarding such things, you should go for the ones which are known to be amazing and are popular with the rest too, such as this Quantum DDS-5 tape.Quantum DDS-5 system can be used easily for small and medium sized businesses. It offers raw native storage capacity of 36 GB. Double this data by applying the data compression functionality, which delivers 2:1 ratio.

Moreover, the uniform surface of the Quantum DDS-5 tape allows for better storage and more area for data. These tapes are extremely easy to handle and will provide efficient backup results. Businesses worrying about increasing their costs will be satisfied with this as it is very affordable. It has proved its space efficiency and keeps on delivering superior uninterrupted performance round the clock.

DDS 3 tape cartridges are very robust, reliable and cost efficient. High performance SDLT tapes, LTO tapes, DDS tapes, AIT tapes, RDX cartridges and TDK, 27822 DDS6 tapes are available at Odsi.co.uk, at low price. Canon imageClass MF4890dw

Essentially identical to the Editors' Choice Canon imageClass MF4880dw in most ways, the Canon imageClass MF4890dw mono laser MFP adds one feature. Its automatic document feeder (ADF) can duplex, meaning it can turn pages over to scan both sides. For anyone who has to deal with scanning, copying, or faxing duplex documents, this can save loads of time, making it well worth the extra cost.

The duplexing ADF also offers a somewhat higher paper capacity than the MF4880dw's ADF, at 50 sheets rather than 35. Beyond that, however, it's hard to find any other difference between the two printers. Both are good choices for either sharing on a network in a micro or small office or for use as a heavy-duty personal printer; both let you connect to either a wired or Wi-Fi network; and both limit their Wi-Fi capability to infrastructure mode only, which means you can only connect to a network with an access point.

Basic MFP features include the ability to print and fax from as well as scan to a PC, including over a network, plus the ability to work as a standalone copier and fax machine. As is typical for a small-office MFP, the ADF can scan up to legal-size pages and is paired with a flatbed that's limited to letter size.

Paper handling for printing is suitable for most small offices with light- to medium-duty print needs, with one 250-sheet tray, a manual feed, and an automatic print duplexer. Very much worth mention is that the combination of a duplexing ADF and duplexing printer lets you copy both single and double-sided originals to your choice of single or double-sided copies.

Setup and Speed
Setting up the MF4890dw is typical for a small-office mono laser MFP. Given its size, at roughly 14.2 by 15.4 by 17.0 inches (HWD), you probably won't want the printer sitting on your desk, but you should be able to find room for it even in a small office without too much trouble. For my tests I connected it to a network using the Ethernet port and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system.

The default setting for the MF4890dw driver after installation is for duplex printing, which is the setting I used for our official tests. However there's a significant difference between Canon's ratings for the printer in duplex and simplex (one-sided) modes, at 16 pages per minute (ppm) for duplex and 26 ppm for simplex, so I tested both.

Canon imageClass MF4890dw

The rated speeds should be close to what you'll see when printing a text file with little formatting. On our tests, I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at 9.6 ppm in duplex mode and 12.2 ppm in simplex mode. Not surprisingly, both modes were essentially tied with the MF4880dw. A better indication of the speed relative to the competition, however, is that even in duplex mode, the MF4890dw was essentially tied with the similarly priced OKI MB451w that I recently reviewed, even though the MB451w was set for simplex mode as the default setting.

Output Quality
Output quality for the MF4890dw is more than acceptable for most business use, with text at the high end of the range that includes most mono laser MFPs, and both graphics and photo output at the low ends of the equivalent, but much tighter, ranges for graphics and photo quality.

For text, that translates to the output being suitable by most people's standards for any business use short of high-quality desktop publishing. Graphics output is a step down from that level, suitable for any internal business need, but only potentially good enough for PowerPoint handouts or the like, depending on how demanding an eye you have. Photo quality is easily good enough to print Web pages with recognizable photos, but only potentially good enough for newsletters or the like, depending once again on the quality level you insist on.

Much like the Canon MF4880dw that's it's so similar to, the MF4890dw delivers a well-balanced set of features that add up to making it a solid performer. Unlike the MF4880dw, however, it also offers a single feature ?in the form of its duplexing ADF?that stands out as a reason to choose it or not. If you rarely, if ever, need to scan, copy, or fax duplex documents, you can save a few dollars by choosing the nearly identical but cheaper MF4880dw. If scanning in duplex is something you need, however, the Canon imageClass MF4890dw is easily worth the extra cost, and it also gives you all the features that make the MF4880dw Editors' Choice.

How technical innovations and social media change consumer ...

In our fast moving world it?s essential for modern companies to understand consumer?s wishes and needs.
The substantial technical progress influences the way how consumer insights are collected and analysed. That raised the question how companies could use technical innovations and social media to explore obvious and hidden consumer needs.

To a first impression on how our society changes in terms of their consuming behaviour and general lifestyle we have to look at the Internet usage.
In the first quarter of 2011 73% of households in the European Union were online. In 2006 it was only the half of all households.

Let?s have a view on the other side of the ocean: Currently 6% of all retail sales in the U.S. come from online sales and it?s predicted to grow up to 8% in 2014.

Considering this, the reasons why consumer insights have to change can be merged into three areas:

  1. The way how data are collected changes.
  2. The way how the resulting communication with the consumers is done changes.
  3. The speed in which innovations are made and consumers react on them changes.

How are data collected?

Today Facebook, Twitter or other services are used to share information on how a new Hollywood Blockbuster or App is received by the consumer.
Google had become the synonym for searching on the Internet, no matter what kind of contents. But Google is not a commercial search engine, they?re an advertising company using ?crawlers? to gather consumer preferences. With the Google tools companies can analyse how long consumers stay on a website and which products are checked out and how long.

These ways of data collection are more reliable then the classical tools of consumer insights, no cheating on consumer interviews of surveys.

How are consumer communications done?

Companies are already using the Internet and social media to communicate with their consumers. 71% on the companies are using Facebook, 59% of the companies are using Twitter.
But there is also a risk for the companies. Consumers are starting to break up with brand ?follows? or ?likes? on Facebook, because their walls are becoming too crowded by advertisements or too many posts of the company/brand annoy them.

Many users only follow or like companies to receive discounts (61%) not because they want to be supportive or they?re interested in the company/brand.

Companies often focus on social media advertisements and posts because they can be used faster and cheaper then classical methods. Reactions on trends can be monitored faster, too.

The speed how innovations are made

Especially in new technology business many new innovations are made daily. New Start Ups on web services are founded in a high frequency. That affects how these companies

communicate in this dynamical environment. Business ideas, product innovations or feedback is shared via Twitter or Facebook. Cheap feedback can be generated to identify obvious or hidden consumer needs, which increases the company?s flexibility.

Conclusion

The use of consumer insights can generate an added value for companies. It can influence the complete consumer communication and marketing mix.
The new technologies and social networking can help to build consumer relationships and answer market questions. But also the risks of these tools have to be considered to ensure a balanced way of communication between new and classical methods.
