Available immediately in most Canadian provinces, the 8x8 Virtual Office cloud communications suite provides small and medium businesses (SMBs) with services such as hosted VoIP, contact center, UC and videoconferencing. Customers can select local phone numbers in each province as well as virtual numbers from Canada, the United States and around the world, both of which save inbound callers the expense of long-distance charges. Companies with locations in Canada and the United States can now have a single, virtual PBX enabling extension dialing with high definition audio between international locations, all with no per minute charges. 8x8's Virtual Office also gives SMBs the option, at no additional cost, of extending those services to smartphones and tablets, enabling their employees to stay productive and responsive on the road and at home.

All 8x8 services comply with applicable Canadian laws, including the ability to locate 911 callers, which many SMBs consider a key requirement before they'll consider VoIP. 8x8 also meets Canadian tax laws, giving customers the peace of mind that their mission-critical communications services won't be lost due to noncompliance. 8x8's services will be delivered from its network of data centers in the US and Saskatchewan, Canada.

"8x8's cloud communications services are designed to provide the reliability, flexibility and scalability that Canadian companies need," said 8x8 Chairman and CEO Bryan Martin. "More than 30,000 U.S. businesses use 8x8, and this expansion is a major first step toward providing SMBs worldwide with a cost-effective, enterprise-grade way to empower their communications."

Air Force general calls sex assaults a 'cancer'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Likening sexual assault in the Air Force's ranks to a cancer, the service's top officer resolved Wednesday to tackle the problem by screening personnel more carefully and putting an end to bad behaviors like binge drinking that can lead to misconduct.

But Gen. Mark Welsh, the Air Force chief of staff, underscored the challenge by telling a House oversight committee that the service recorded a disturbing number of reports of sexual assault last year even as it worked to curb misconduct in the wake of a sex scandal at its training headquarters in Texas. Dozens of young female recruits and airmen at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio were victimized by their instructors who sexually harassed, improperly touched or raped them.

Most difficult, Welsh said, is transforming a culture in which victims are often reluctant to report what happened because of guilt, shame or fear they won't be believed.

"Why, on what was undoubtedly the worst day of a victim's life, did they not turn to us for help?" Welsh said during testimony before the House Armed Services Committee. "We are missing something fundamental in the human-to-human interaction that will allow them to feel safe enough to come to us and report."

An Air Force veteran who was sexually assaulted while serving ? but not at Lackland ? described how intimidating it is for young enlisted personnel to speak up.

"You're stuck," Jennifer Norris told the committee. "If you want a career, you don't want to say anything because you get retaliated against." Norris, who said she medically retired in 2010 with post-traumatic stress disorder, said the Air Force and the other military branches have a sexual assault epidemic and a broken system of justice.

The scandal at Lackland, now known as Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, continues to unfold nearly two years after the first victim came forward. All U.S. airmen report to Lackland for basic training. The base has about 500 military training instructors for about 35,000 airmen who graduate every year. About 1 in 5 recruits is a woman; most instructors are men.

The initial results of Air Force investigation released in November described abuses of power by instructors who took advantage of a weak oversight system to prey on young recruits.

The inquiry has found that 32 military training instructors allegedly engaged in inappropriate or coercive sexual relationships with 59 recruits and airmen at Lackland, according to the Air Force. Three of the most recent alleged victims are males.

Six instructors have been convicted in courts-martial on charges ranging from adultery, rape and conducting unprofessional relationships. Nine more instructors are awaiting courts-martial. Two more received nonjudicial punishments. Fifteen 15 instructors remain under investigation.

The Air Force has changed the way it selects officers and instructors who train new recruits and reduced from four to three years the amount of time they can spend as instructors, said Gen. Edward Rice, head of the Air Education and Training Command. Rice, who testified along with Welsh, said more women are being placed in supervisory roles within the training command. The Lackland scandal has not affected recruiting, Rice said.

"I'm not in any way ready to declare victory," Rice said.

The preliminary figures for 2012 show there were nearly 800 reports of cases, ranging from inappropriate touching to rape, according to Welsh's testimony. That would be a nearly 30 percent increase from 2011, when 614 cases were reported. The number could be much greater, Welsh said, because many cases are never reported.

"It's astonishing, really," Welsh said. "Eight hundred is not acceptable, 600 is not acceptable. 300 is not acceptable. Zero is the only answer."

The 2012 figures are being audited and reviewed before being included in a report the Defense Department will submit to Congress in April, according to Welsh.

Welsh said he has stressed to the Air Force's officer corps and senior enlisted ranks the importance of eliminating sexual misconduct. As part of that effort, Welsh issued a "Letter to Airmen" this month that said images, songs and stories that are obscene or vulgar are not part of the Air Force heritage.

Not everyone who commits sexual assault is a predator, but there are predators in the ranks and they have to be found before they act, Welsh said.

The Air Force also has to identify and stop the activities that can lead to inappropriate actions.

"A young man who routinely binge drinks and loses control of himself is going to conduct bad behavior," Welsh said. "That bad behavior could result in sexual assault. Let's stop the binge drinking."

Savvy Golf | Content for Reprint

Author: RoseannaLeaton | Total views: 375 Comments: 0
Word Count: 690 Date:

The key to playing savvy golf is to play to your strengths.? You, like me, will no doubt have played with golfers who insist on choosing the club and shot that they think should be played in a particular circumstance, irrespective of whether they are comfortable with that club or have indeed practiced that shot sufficiently to feel confident in its outcome.? That's not playing savvy golf.

?

?

The number one rule for the savvy golfer is to feel comfortable with the club that you have in your hand.? If it doesn't feel comfortable and imbue you with confidence then you cannot possibly commit to the shot.? Your intent and focus will be obliterated by your lack of comfort and your ball will quite likely shoot off along a very undesirable direction and trajectory.

?

?

There are many different ways in which to play each hole you encounter upon the golf course.? In reality you will most often find that so long as you make your wedges and putter into "happy clubs" you will score pretty well irrespective of what comes before.? I am of course speaking generally here.? But even if you choose to hit three shots with a seven iron to get near to your par 5 hole and then finish off with a chip and two putts you are playing safe bogey golf.

?

?

What I'm really getting at is that if you are standing on the tee box with your driver in hand and wondering in your own mind whether or not you can pull the shot off, you probably won't be able to do so.? If your ball is in an ugly position behind a bunch of trees and you can't see or haven't practiced a shot like the one that Bubba pulled off in the Masters, you probably won't be able to do it.

?

?

When you have a choice of potential shots to play, the best one, the savvy one, is the shot that you are at you are most comfortable with.? Someone else might be most comfortable with a 7 iron out of the rough but if you feel best with a 5 wood in your hands then that's the shot to play.? It doesn't matter what shot should be played.? What matters is that you are comfortable with the shot and you can see the shot in your minds eye.? Savvy golf is all about playing to your individual and unique strengths.

?

?

I am sure that you, like me, have heard your companion golfers commenting along the lines of "Don't know what's going to happen here so look out" as they set up to their ball.?? You, like me, have no doubt done the same yourself!? And we kick ourselves afterwards for being so stupid.? That's simply not playing savvy golf!

?

?

If you are around the green and a flop shot would be perfect, but you don't feel comfortable with that club or shot then don't attempt the shot.? Make a mental note to go practice it later so that you do feel comfortable next time.? In the meanwhile, choose the next best shot that you do feel comfortable with and play that one.? A chip onto the opposite side of the green and a two putt is better than a failed flop shot that digs you into a deeper hole and destroys your confidence and momentum at the same time.

?

?

Golf is a very mental game.? You have to think well, plan well, manage your expectations and accept outcomes.? Savvy golf is all about playing to your strengths.

U.S. top court rejects hospitals' Medicare claims suit

(Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court rejected on Tuesday a bid by a group of 18 hospitals to reopen a specialized group of Medicare reimbursement claims that are up to 25 years old.

The hospitals, which are entitled to extra compensation for treating a large number of low-income patients, claimed the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services miscalculated those payments between 1987 and 1994.

The hospitals based their claim on a separate lawsuit that found in 2006 that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services used a flawed process to determine the number of low-income patients treated by hospitals. The miscalculation resulted in underpayments, the hospitals said.

When the hospitals appealed the payments, however, the agency's Provider Reimbursement Review Board rejected many of the claims as too old. In 2006, shortly after the lawsuit exposed the calculation mistake, the hospitals sued for the proper reimbursements.

The government argued the hospitals missed their opportunity to challenge the payments because the Medicare law imposes a six-month limit for appeals. Although the review board could have extended that deadline up to three years for "good cause," the hospitals filed their claims more than 10 years after the six month deadline expired.

The hospitals said it was unfair to impose the deadline under the circumstances, alleging the agency knew about and failed to disclose its calculation errors.

The district court sided with the government, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit reversed the decision in 2011. The government appealed to the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments in the case in December.

The high court, in a unanimous ruling on Tuesday, found the hospitals had missed their opportunity to appeal. Relaxing the deadline would "essentially gut" the requirement that an appeal be filed within six months, or three years for good cause, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote for the court.

Robert Roth, a lawyer for the hospitals, said there was a "big problem" with the decision.

"It leaves providers without a remedy where they could not have known there was a problem with their Medicare payment until after their time for appeal had passed," he said.

It is now up to Congress to address that unfairness, he added.

The Justice Department did not immediately provide a comment.

Mark Polston, a former Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services lawyer now at King & Spalding, said a ruling for the hospitals could have increased significantly the government's exposure to claims for past payment errors.

The case is Sebelius v. Auburn Regional Medical Center, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 11-1231.

Allied health sciences: UHS launches new physical therapy course ...

LAHORE:?

The University of Health Sciences is committed to developing online training courses for allied health personnel, said Vice Chancellor Prof IA Naveed on Saturday, addressing the first two-year class in the transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy (t-DPT) programme.

The new programme is designed to provide contemporary knowledge and skills to practising physical therapists.

?What makes physical therapists important is that they know how to look at the bigger picture and take care of the smallest details which sometimes mean nothing to others, even patients themselves, but at the end make a huge difference,? Prof Naveed said in his speech

UHS Registrar Dr Asad Zaheer said that the university was in discussions with the Higher Education Commission to make the t-DPT programme equivalent to an MPhil degree.

Dr Muhammad Asim, the course coordinator, said that the university had developed a sophisticated web portal through which students could pick up and submit their assignments. In the future, the university would offer courses for allied health personnel through its web portal.

Dr Fariha Shah, a faculty member, said that across the globe, physical therapy was recognised as an important treatment for musculo-skeletal, neuro-muscular, cardiopulmonary, integumentary, vestibular and sports-related injuries.

Energy Savings Through Windows - Troy, MI | Martino Home ...

We?ve gotten a lot of calls for insulation lately. It seems like everyone in Oakland County Michigan is looking to save on their energy bills and keep their home warm this winter. Aside from insulating your home, you can save money and energy with the right windows.

Window R-Values
As mentioned before, R-value measures how well a construction material insulates. The higher the R-value, the better the material is. Conventional fiberglass battens usually have an R-value of 10.9. An average glass window has an R-value of one, which means that a lot of energy can pass through easily. It?s been estimated that windows in the United State consume a third of a buildings energy or about 4.1 quadrillion BTU of energy.

Most buildings that are LEED-certified use insulated glass, or windows with two or three panes in the frame. Air gets trapped in the spaces between panes, increasing their efficiency and usually providing an R-value rating of two or three. Even more energy-efficient windows have argon or krypton gas between the panes.

Double Glazed
One of the best ways to get the most out of your windows is to get double-glazed windows. This windows will keep the most heat in. A lot of older homes have thin windows, so you may need to update yours. Installing new windows can be expensive, but when you look at how much they can save on your energy bills, they?re definitely worth it.

If insulation has only saved your home a little this winter, you may want to look into getting new windows. We?ll be here if you decide to take the plunge.

91% Silver Linings Playbook

All Critics (186) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (170) | Rotten (16)

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

Lawrence, in her most high-low, sad-comic turn yet, is remarkable.

Consistently engaging, funny, and touching. This is the kind of picture in which two hours of running time whiz by in a flash.

Silver Linings Playbook is the best movie of 2012 and the acting is mind-boggling good. Give me the Oscar picks, and it wins in every nominated category.

Succeeds less on the merits of aesthetics than its willingness to give in to crowd-pleasing effervescence.

A quirky, dramatic and totally entertaining movie that features someof the best acting of the year.

Having gone from unknown actress to Oscar nominee to "The Hunger Games" in what seemed like a blink of an eye, Lawrence shows herself a master of timing and plays off Cooper brilliantly.

Silver Linings Playbook doesn't settle for the routine or the clich?. It's a funny drama about imperfect people looking for love. It also happens to be the best romantic comedy in years.

Unique, beguiling, and occasionally frustrating: These descriptions equally apply to Silver Linings Playbook and its two central characters.

Russell keeps the outcome interesting; he knows that every silver lining has a cloud.

A feel-good film filled with laughs and memorable performances, David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook leaves you so ecstatically happy that it might just be the most recommendable movie of 2012.

The plot is clever and a bit unconventional. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro all turn in wonderful performances in this very funny, very warm comedy.

During its rocky road to becoming a fractured love story, Silver Linings Playbook and its great ensemble cast run a funny, conflict-mined, even suspenseful path. It's a total winner.

Unlike the usual run-of-the-mill rom-com, this film bristles with life from the central core of the love story, to the quirky band of supporting players who add to the fun.

With "The Silver Linings Playbook," Russell picks up the traditional quirky rom-com genre and shakes it around, just to see what happens. Where it's going is fairly predictable; how it gets there isn't.

A delightfully dysfunctional romantic comedy that's moving, funny and features just the right amount of crazy love.

A tenderhearted tale about two terribly wounded souls who survive by grudgingly leaning on each other's shoulder.

Your best bet for a movie that will entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even make you tear-up.

Russell handles the shifts in tone extremely effectively, and has sacrificed little of his sardonic edge in crafting something this superficially accessible.

Joshua Tree spider species named for U2's Bono

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) ? It appeared Bono and arachnids didn't mix when his "Spider-Man" musical had a rough Broadway run, but that didn't keep a biologist from naming an actual spider species after the U2 singer.

Jason Bond of Alabama's Auburn University has identified 33 new species of trapdoor spider, including three of them in the California desert at Joshua Tree National Park. The park's namesake is featured in the title and cover of U2's 1987 album, "The Joshua Tree."

The Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/UWsRjW ) reports that Bond named two of the spiders after Indian tribes and one, A. bonoi, after Bono.

Bond has named other spider species after Angelina Jolie, Cesar Chavez and Stephen Colbert.

The trapdoor spider, found in the Southwestern U.S., is so-named because it makes a hatch to hide from prey.

Algerian army stages "final assault" on gas plant

ALGIERS/IN AMENAS, Algeria (Reuters) - The Algerian army carried out a dramatic final assault to end a siege by Islamist militants at a desert gas plant on Saturday in which 23 hostages were killed, many of them believed to be foreigners, the interior ministry said.

Thirty-two al Qaeda-linked militants were killed in the army operation to recapture the complex, according to a provisional toll from the ministry. A statement said 107 foreign hostages and 685 Algerian hostages had survived.

Militants seized the remote compound in the Sahara desert before dawn on Wednesday, taking a large number of hostages, including foreigner workers, and booby-trapped the compound with explosives.

The crisis marked a serious escalation of unrest in northwestern Africa, where French forces have been in Mali since last week fighting an Islamist takeover of Timbuktu and other towns.

The gas plant near the town of In Amenas was home to expatriate workers from Britain's BP, Norway's Statoil, Japanese engineering firm JGC Corp and others. One American and one British citizen have been confirmed dead.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Saturday he feared for the lives of five British citizens still unaccounted for. Statoil said five of its workers, all Norwegian nationals, were still missing. Japanese and American workers are also unaccounted for.

"We feel a deep and growing unease ... we fear that over the next few days we will receive bad news," Statoil Chief Executive Helge Lund said on Saturday. "People we have spoken to describe unbelievable, horrible experiences."

The Islamists' attack has tested Algeria's relations with the outside world, exposed the vulnerability of multinational oil operations in the Sahara and pushed Islamist radicalism in northern Africa to centre stage.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague confirmed that Algerian military operations at the plant had been concluded.

"We understand that the site is not yet fully safe because of hazards such as booby traps and so they are still working on that," Hague said.

Some Western governments expressed frustration at not being informed of the Algerian authorities' plans to storm the complex. Algeria's response to the raid will have been conditioned by the legacy of a civil war against insurgents in the 1990s which claimed 200,000 lives.

HOSTAGES FREED

As the army closed in, 16 foreign hostages were freed, a source close to the crisis said. They included two Americans and one Portuguese.

BP's chief executive Bob Dudley said on Saturday four of its 18 workers at the site were missing. The remaining 14 were safe.

The captors said their attack on the Algerian gas plant was a response to the French offensive in Mali. However, officials say the elaborate raid would have been planned well before France launched its strikes.

Scores of Westerners and hundreds of Algerian workers were inside the heavily fortified gas compound when it was seized on Wednesday.

Hundreds escaped on Thursday when the army launched a rescue operation, but many hostages were killed.

Before the interior ministry released its provisional death toll, an Algerian security source said eight Algerians and at least seven foreigners were among the victims, including two Japanese, two Britons and a French national. One British citizen was killed when the gunmen seized the hostages on Wednesday.

The U.S. State Department said on Friday one American, Frederick Buttaccio, had died but gave no further details.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said nobody was going to attack the United States and get away with it.

"We have made a commitment that we're going to go after al Qaeda wherever they are and wherever they try to hide," he said during a visit to London. "We have done that obviously in Afghanistan, Pakistan, we've done it in Somalia, in Yemen and we will do it in North Africa as well."

BURNED BODIES

Earlier on Saturday, Algerian special forces found 15 unidentified burned bodies at the plant, a source told Reuters.

The field commander of the group that attacked the plant is a fighter from Niger called Abdul Rahman al-Nigeri, according to Mauritanian news agencies. His boss, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a veteran of fighting in Afghanistan and Algeria's civil war of the 1990s, appears not to have joined the raid.

Britain, Japan and other countries have expressed irritation that the army assault was ordered without consultation and officials grumbled at the lack of information.

But French President Francois Hollande said the Algerian military's response seemed to have been the best option given that negotiation was not possible.

"When you have people taken hostage in such large number by terrorists with such cold determination and ready to kill those hostages - as they did - Algeria has an approach which to me, as I see it, is the most appropriate because there could be no negotiation," Hollande said.

The apparent ease with which the fighters swooped in from the dunes to take control of an important energy facility, which produces some 10 percent of the natural gas on which Algeria depends for its export income, has raised questions over the value of outwardly tough Algerian security measures.

Algerian officials said the attackers may have had inside help from among the hundreds of Algerians employed at the site.

Security in the half-dozen countries around the Sahara desert has long been a preoccupation of the West. Smugglers and militants have earned millions in ransom from kidnappings.

The most powerful Islamist groups operating in the Sahara were severely weakened by Algeria's secularist military in the civil war in the 1990s. But in the past two years the regional wing of al Qaeda gained fighters and arms as a result of the civil war in Libya, when arsenals were looted from Muammar Gaddafi's army.

France says the hostage incident proves its decision to fight Islamists in neighboring Mali was necessary. Al Qaeda-linked fighters, many with roots in Algeria and Libya, took control of northern Mali last year.

Japan stocks at highest since April 2010

BANGKOK (AP) ? Japan's stock market closed at its highest level since April 2010 on Tuesday, buoyed by a weaker yen and major stimulus measures to help the country's struggling economy.

Elsewhere, investors sat on the sidelines or sold shares to rake in profits ahead of the release of U.S. retail sales for December and fourth-quarter corporate earnings. Investors will be scrutinizing company revenues to assess whether the drawn-out "fiscal cliff" debate had an impact on consumer spending. A series of tax hikes and spending cuts, due to come into effect Jan. 1, were only averted by a last-minute deal.

Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.1 percent to 6,102.18. Germany's DAX fell 0.1 percent to 7,719.62. France's CAC-40 was nearly unchanged at 3,708.27. Wall Street was set for a weak open. Dow Jones futures fell 0.1 percent to 13,416. S&P 500 futures also lost ground, falling 0.2 percent to 1,461.20.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.7 percent to finish at 10,879.08, its highest close in nearly three years, after Masaaki Shirakawa, governor of Japan's central bank, pledged to take action to combat the country's deflationary slump.

In a boost for Japanese exporters, the yen has slid against the U.S. dollar and euro since the Liberal Democratic Party returned to power in national elections last month. Its leader, Shinzo Abe, has been lobbying the central bank for aggressive action to end Japan's years of deflation, demanding that it meet an inflation target of about 2 percent.

In announcing a 20 trillion yen ($225 billion) economic stimulus package last Friday, Abe reiterated his calls for the Bank of Japan to do more to boost growth.

Elsewhere in Asia, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.1 percent to 4,716.60 and South Korea's Kospi dropped 1.1 percent to 1,986. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.1 percent to 23,381.51.

"It's just profit-taking because the index is already overbought and many stocks are overbought," said Kwong Man Bun, chief operating officer at KGI Securities in Hong Kong.

Benchmarks in Indonesia, mainland China and New Zealand rose while the Philippines, Taiwan and Singapore fell.

In a speech in the U.S. on Monday, Bernanke said the U.S. Federal Reserve's bond-buying program, dubbed quantitative easing, was providing key support for the economy and made no mention of winding the program down, even though some Fed officials recently said they favor doing that.

The U.S. central bank has been buying $85 billion a month in Treasurys and mortgage bonds to try to keep borrowing costs low and encourage more spending.

Analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in an email commentary that markets found some relief in Bernanke's speech as it did not repeat the views of some Fed officials in hinting at an early ending of quantitative easing.

On Friday, investors will assess a slew of data for signs of growth in China, the world's second-largest economy. China will issue fourth-quarter growth data for 2012 as well as GDP growth for the year. Factory output, investment and retail sales will also be released.

Among individual stocks, Australian surf-wear maker Billabong soared 16 percent after receiving its sixth takeover bid in less than six months. Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. fell 3.4 percent following reports that demand for Apple Inc.'s iPhone may be weaker than expected. The company is a leading maker of iPhones.

Benchmark oil for February delivery was down 14 cents to $93.99 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 58 cents to finish at $94.15 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3371 from $1.3378 late Monday in New York. The dollar fell to 88.73 yen from 89.41 yen.

Chinese bank banking on United support

Manchester United agreed on Tuesday two new sponsorship deals?with a prominent Chinese bank and soft-drink manufacturer as the English?Premier League club looks to capitalise on their status in Asia.

The three-year deals with China Construction Bank and beverage producer?Wahaha are a sign of United's mass appeal in a country where they are believed?to have 108 million supporters.

The club's agreement with CCB will see the advent of an official Manchester United branded credit card, which is set to become a popular?feature for the club's fans in China, offering a range of benefits, including?various club-related incentives.

United commercial director Richard Arnold said the nature of the deal will?help to strengthen the club's connection with its Chinese fans, who he?describes as 'among the most supportive.'

"Together with our TV and mobile partners, financial services products?give us tangible ways of providing real benefits to our fans that enable them?to establish a closer relationship with their favorite team"

United commercial director, Richard Arnold

"Together with our TV and mobile partners, financial services products?give us tangible ways of providing real benefits to our fans that enable them?to establish a closer relationship with their favorite team,'' Arnold said.

The club's agreement with Wahaha has seen the company become United's?first official soft-drink partner.

The firm is regarded as China's largest beverage producer in the past 11?years and Arnold expressed his joy at the deal.

"We are delighted to be able to work with a company which, like?Manchester United, is dedicated to innovation and leadership in its field,"?Arnold said.

United has fostered a strong fan base in China in recent years, visiting?the country 11 times to play friendlies since 1975.

United, which is owned by the Glazer family, has been rapidly raising cash?through global sponsorship deals.

United's commercial revenue grew 13.7 percent to a then $188 million in 2011-12, the largest in the Premier League.

Ahead Of Microsoft Surface Pro Release Date, ?Sales Figures? For The ARM RT Version Appear

NEW YORK ? The Surface tablet is Microsoft?s first venture in the hardware business, beautifully designed and graced with the highly capable Windows 8 operating system, are these tablets really the iPad killer we thought they were or are they just overhyped niche tablets trying to be many things at the same time? Well, analysts have shared their thoughts on how the Surface RT is performing on the market but so far, things are not looking as good as we had hoped.

According to numerous analysts, sales of the Microsoft Surface RT is not as impressive as they have initially predicted no thanks to the continuously growing sales of Apple?s iPad tablets which are powered by the Cupertino company?s iOS platform, the reason being? Microsoft is selling its tablet in the same price point that Apple is selling its 10-inch iPads but the Windows RT?s application portfolio ? despite the growing number of apps ? is still lacking while the iOS platform?s maturity in that regard is apparent and [like always] Apple has a massive loyal customer base, the iPad is already leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.

Another thing worth mentioning is that prospective Surface buyers are actually holding out their purchases for the Microsoft Surface Pro instead of the Surface RT since the latter is not competitively priced and its??well endowed? brother packs a full-fledged Windows 8 operating system under its hood as well as a full high-definition display and an Intel Core i5 processor [as opposed to the ARM-based Tegra 3 from Nvidia] which enables the system to run legacy applications, ultimately turning the device into a super tablet that the iPad can only dream to be.

Ahead of the Surface Pro?s release date, Brent Thill of UBS Research told CNET that Microsoft has probably only sold about a million units of its Surface RT tablet which lead him to comment that the Surface RT ?is a consumer device with [fourth-quarter] sales suffering from the difficult ?iPad?compare and narrow distribution? and speaking of narrow distribution, it is only possible to purchase your own Surface tablet via Microsoft?s official online portal and very few brick and mortar retail stores which lessened the software maker?s chance of selling more of its Windows-powered tablets,?some online retailers are offering the Surface RT tablet but with a ?higher-than-the-already-expensive? price tag.

As stated by CNET?Thill did mention that the Surface Pro is ?more promising?, as a matter of fact, he even went as far as to say that he sees it ?[Surface Pro] as an ?alternative to the iPad?. As for Microsoft?s fiscal 2013?Thill estimates that Surface sales will increase to 2.5 million units and for fiscal 2014, he?s expecting to witness 8 million Surface tablets fly off store shelves.

There?s a huge demand for full personal computing experience and consumers are always looking for something new, the upcoming Surface Pro is meant to deliver that full PC computing experience ? albeit in an insanely portable package, it?s definitely not the end of the line for the Surface, we?re pretty sure that the big numbers Microsoft has been aiming for will be fulfilled by the Surface Pro, if Apple has its loyal band of iOS followers then Microsoft has its monstrous Windows fanboys ? er, ?fan base?.

A very loving dog - Pets, Birds and Animals

A very loving dogLaika is the new star of ?We want to know your pet!?, A contest that started last week with a very friendly parrot.

It is a 7 year old bitch who lives in Palma de Mallorca. She is very affectionate and can not be separated from one of his mistresses. Their dependence is total, is like his mother.

How is that person everywhere has never been necessary to put strap desperdigue not every time he goes to the street. That certainly is an advantage for her and for their owners.

Former San Bernardino mayor's son lands contract councilman calls 'too lucrative'

SAN BERNARDINO -- The son of former Mayor Judith Valles has landed a contract with the city to collect on roughly $6 million in outstanding penalties assessed against properties not up to code.

Attorney Chadwick Bradbury, who has a private practice in Palm Desert and worked as an in-house litigator for the San Bernardino City Attorney's Office from July 3 to Wednesday, Jan. 9, will receive a $6,000 monthly retainer and a 25-percent commission on all monies he collects for the city, according to his contract - approved by the City Council on a 6-1 vote on Dec. 17.

Bradbury, 53, of Palm Desert, began his new job as a contract employee for the city on Thursday, Jan. 10.

City Attorney James Penman said the city has fallen behind on its collections from noncompliant property owners and that the city's bankruptcy has prompted aggressive action.

"This is money that's out there that we need to go after," Penman said.

Councilman Fred Shorett, the only council member who voted against the contract, said the contract is too lucrative and unnecessary given the resources the City Attorney's Office already has at its fingertips.

"I don't understand why we should be paying a $6,000 monthly retainer. It doesn't make any sense," Shorett said. "And a 25-percent commission is ridiculously high."

Bradbury will also be tasked with prosecuting civil enforcement actions through the court including judicial foreclosures, which will allow the city to collect on its

administrative civil penalties, and receivership petitions, which will allow an appointed receiver to borrow on the equity of the noncompliant properties in order to bring them up to code.

In six months, the terms of Bradbury's contract, i.e. his monthly retainer and his commission rate, will be re-negotiated based on a performance evaluation and a cost/benefit analysis, according to the contract.

Bradbury's first order of business is to collect roughly $2.1 million in administrative civil penalties assessed from 12 properties in which liens have already been issued by the court, Penman said.

Shorett questions why Penman didn't task one of his own attorneys on staff to do the job. If a contract was necessary, Shorett questions why it didn't go out to bid.

Penman said the contract, per city policy, didn't need to go out to bid because it is a service contract. He said Bradbury, as an in-house litigator for the city, settled a number of cases favorable to the city and was able to start on some of the judicial foreclosures he has resumed under his contract.

"We were very impressed with him. He did a very good job for us," Penman said.

Bradbury was one of roughly 20 applicants who responded to an ad the city placed in the Los Angeles and San Francisco daily journals - the state's largest legal newspapers - seeking an in-house litigator. Penman said Bradbury was selected for the job based on his more than 15 years of experience as a litigator and glowing recommendations from other attorneys and judges, not his relationship to the former Mayor.

"He was by far the stand out applicant," Penman said. "He was head and shoulders above everybody else."

Valles said she did not reach out to any of her former colleagues in city government to lobby for her son, whom she said is a former Palm Springs firefighter who became a lawyer after injuring himself on the job and taking a disability retirement.

"I didn't do that while I was Mayor, why would I do that now? That would be stupid," Valles said Friday. "I didn't call anybody or try to influence anybody."

Penman said with Bradbury's qualifications, he would have recommended Bradbury for the contract even if he were the son of current Mayor Pat Morris.

Shorett said he is concerned about how some may view Bradbury's hiring by the city and his subsequent landing of the contract.

"I personally am very cognizant of a perceived conflict of interest, and I always think it's best to avoid even the perception of a conflict of interest or political favor," Shorett said. "Whether it is or isn't, the perception is there or could be there."

Bradbury declined to comment for this story.

Chinese company breaks into US patent leaderboard

Shenzhen-based Hong Fu Jin Precision Industry becomes the first Chinese company to enter top 50 patent assignee list in the United States.

In a statement Friday, IFI Claims Patent Services announced the top 50 patent assignees in the U.S. for 2012. Hong Fu Jin Precision which--was no. 52 in 2011--landed at no. 42 last year, IFI said.

2012 was also the first time Google entered the top 50 rankings. Among the top 50, Google's number of patents granted increased the fastest at 170 percent, earning it the no. 21 position with 1,151 patents.

Google edged out Apple by 15 patents. The number of patents granted to Apple grew the second fastest at 68 percent to 1,136 patents, which made it the 22nd company in the list.

IBM managed to hold on to the top spot for 20 consecutive years. It received a record 6,478 utility patents in 2012, up nearly 5 percent from 2011.

Top 10 US Patent Assignee 2012
Top 10 US Patent Assignee 2012

Asian companies continued to make up the slight majority of the top 50 ranking. Samsung was No. 2 with 5,081 patents assigned, a growth of nearly 4 percent from 2011. Canon was at no. 3 with 3,174 patents, a year-on-year increase of 12 percent, followed by Sony at no. 4 with around 33 percent increase from 2011 while Panasonic was at no. 5.

As the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) does not announce the number of patents it grants, the IFI calculates the figures using its proprietary algorithms and "50 years' experience analyzing USPTO data", the company said.

IFI said USPTO issued 253,155 utility patents in 2012, which was the highest annual number on record and an increase of about 13 percent over 2011.

As the list includes only actual patent grants in the U.S., the trend was different from what was observed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2011. In March 2012, WIPO announced that China led the growth in patent filing in 2011 with ZTE at the top of the ranking with 2,826 patent applications. The organization has yet to release figures for 2012.

Our family of 5 will be relocating to Denver this ... - Zillow Real Estate ...

Hi there we are a family of 5 relocating to the Denver area in the fall from the Houston, TX area. ?My husband will be working in Westminister so we have to consider the commute. We don't know much about Denver and are looking to rent a 3+ bedroom house for under $2000 amonth. Schools are very important as our daughter will be in 5th grade and we want her to have a quality public education. ?Also she is mega social so having great neighbors is very important.

Therapy Report Center for iPad - App Info & Stats | iOSnoops

? App description

Have you ever wished that there you had one app that would keep the data from all your apps organized in one place? What about if this app could compile a report with all the results imported from all of your best speech apps? Now, imagine if this same app would allow you to add your caseload on to the iPad only once, and have all the students? profiles exported only once all at the same time to all of your Smarty Ears apps? This way rather than adding students one by one each time you download a new app, you can have your new app ready with all your students with the touch of a button.

Smarty Ears proudly presents the Therapy Report Center-- also known as the TRC. The TRC will make app use for therapy even more efficient. The TRC is now a centralized location for student?s results from all Smarty Ears apps.

Here is how it works:

In the past, when you downloaded a new Smarty Ears app you would have to add each student to the app, one by one. Now with the TRC, you enter your students on TRC only once and export all of the students at the same time to each newly downloaded or existing Smarty Ears app. This makes the process of adding students one by one to many apps a simple two-step process. In the past, if you owned 10 Smarty Ears apps, and had 40 students on your caseload, you would have to repeat the process of adding students 400 times. The TRC saves time and makes the use of the iPad even more efficient.

The second main function of TRC is to keep all of the data from all of your Smarty Ears apps organized in one place. Once you are done with an activity on your Smarty Ears app, simply export the results to TRC, select the student you want to import the data to and you are done. Now, imagine being able to go to one app to print student?s progress report that contains the results from all your speech therapy apps under a student profile. Rather than opening multiple apps, and printing multiple results, you can simply export the data from each app on to TRC and have it compile a final student report with all the results from all apps.

The TRC also allows you to add progress notes and images with student activities that were not done with the iPad. The final report can be exported into a pdf file, which can be emailed or saved on to iBooks.

At Smarty Ears, we are proud to continually bring great products that help make the lives speech therapists more efficient and help speech therapists have fun and engaging materials to help children with speech and communication delays. The Therapy Report Center is the app that makes the best speech therapy apps come together!

Visit www.smartyearsapps.com to discover which apps are compatible with TRC.
