Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (Xbox 360)

Everything old is new again. The entertainment industry has proven that mantra time and time again as film, television, and music continually tap nostalgia for inspiration. The relatively young video game industry recently dipped into that well, with the likes of Capcom's Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10, retro-themed PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 titles designed to mimic the Blue Bomber's 8-bit NES adventures. Several other titles reveled in a similar retro video game aesthetic, but very few tapped the overall retro feel of the decade that spawned video game classics: the 1980s. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is one. It takes 2012's popular Far Cry 3?title and filters it through a '80s vision of the future, complete with neon, dark synth music, and exciting gunplay. It's a smaller game than Far Cry 3, but this downloadable PC, PlayStation 3?, and Xbox 360?title is the better game.

Welcome to the Party, Pal
Blood Dragon isn't a mere standalone Far Cry 3 expansion; it's a celebration of '80s action silliness. Pseudo action star and #1 James Cameron go-to guy Michael Biehn (Aliens, Terminator, The Abyss) lends his gruff voice to Sgt. Rex "Power" Colt, a cybernetic commando who battles the evil Omega Force army in a post-apocalyptic world where mutants and dinosaur-like Blood Dragons roam. Yes, it's '80s cheese, but well-done '80s cheese, highlighted by homages to Predator, Terminator, and other testosterone-filled flicks from the decade of decadence.

At its core, Blood Dragon plays very much like Far Cry 3 with its tight first-person shooter mechanics, ziplines, collectibles, dangerous animals, multitude of side-missions, garrisons (the game's version of outposts), and open world (though on a much smaller scale). But it's the game's playful adherence to old school action movie clich?s that give Blood Dragon its own footing. The "futuristic" year of 2007?as envisioned from a decidedly '80s point of view?recalls elements from our own real-world '80s with its cold war fears, and big, dumb action movies. The latter, naturally, receives the most spotlight.

Got No Time to Bleed
Sgt. Rex "Power" Colt starts his mission armed to the teeth with a shotgun, pistol, grenade stash, and other weapons that let you ventilate enemy troops with well-placed shots. It's a potent arsenal that only gets better as you loot corpses for ammo and cash.

Money lets you purchase add-ons like silencers and laser scopes from designated areas within garrisons. The carnage you unleash over the course of the game earns CP (Cyber Points) that as XP (experience points) which level up Sgt. Colt with increased health, better accuracy, and other traits. Unfortunately, Blood Dragon doesn't let you select abilities; you automatically gain new ones after reaching certain plateaus. Some may not find that a fault, but I would've loved to dictate how my cyber-commando functions.

As you become more powerful, your ability to take down hordes of Omega Force warriors becomes increasingly effective and fun. In fact, Blood Dragon keeps tally of your accuracy, efficiency from cover, stealth kills, chain kills, and more. The game's tutorial, thankfully, gives you a rundown of the basics, though Sgt. Colt?in a bit of meta-commentary on the game playing experience?constantly gripes that he just wants to kill.

You're a Funny Guy, Sully
Environments are fittingly dark, with Tron-like splashes of blue, orange, and green neon. As a result, the world carries a weighty feel that's given levity by a handful of Arnold-worthy one-liners and hilarious cut scenes that recall the limited color schemes and animations of Sega CD and TurboGrafx-16 titles. The jokes, however, sometimes fall flat. For example, there's a button that causes Sgt. Colt to flip the bird when pressed. That felt less '80s cool, and more immature junior high school student. At other times, some of the dialogue seemed nothing but an obvious set up for a Schwarzeneggeresque one-liner.

Still, Blood Dragon redeems itself in other ways. Omega Force's cyber-troops speak with hilarious computerized vocals, and the screen tears with VHS-like tracking effects when explosions or player death occurs. The attention to '80s ridiculousness is obviously handled by a team with sincere love for the era.

Nothing symbolizes the game's grasp on the wacky than the eponymous Blood Dragons, neon-colored dinosaurs that fire lasers from their eyes. They roam the lands between garrisons and prove quite lethal combatants should you rush encounter one without a sound strategy. Their appetites for cybernetic hearts, however, make them tools in combating the enemy. For example, the tickers you collect from fallen enemies can be tossed into a garrison's entry, which attracts nearby Blood Dragons who rush into the base for a meal. Laughter quickly ensued as I sat upon a hilltop and watched Omega Force members defend themselves with laser rifle from a rampaging dinosaur who shot lasers from his eyes.

Gonna Have Me Some Fun!
Ubisoft must be commended for taking the Far Cry series in this radically different direction. In a gaming industry populated by titles that takes themselves far too seriously (for example, the original Far Cry 3), it's good to see that there's still a place for the goofy.

Game developers have a long history of using of using '80s action movies for inspiration?the original NES Contra has not too subtle Stallone- and Schwarzenegger-based characters that fight Xenomorph-like aliens. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, likewise, wears its inspirations on its sleeve. At times the dialogue forced and the bird-flipping comes off as too Duke Nukem-like, but Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon's old school strengths outweigh its few weakness.

Tax Hit If Parents Pay Kids Student Loan? | Bankrate.com

Don TaylorDear Dr. Don,
My daughter has $145,000 in student loan debt. We have some savings and want to pay $110,000 toward the loan. Is there a tax consequence for any of us? The interest rate on her loan is 6.9 percent. She graduates at the end of May.

Thanks,
-- Sharma's Senior

Dear Sharma's Senior,
I don't get it. What have you been waiting for? Why did you make her take out the loans in the first place? Did you want to make sure she was going to graduate? It would have been better for you to make the tuition payments directly to the school, which wouldn't be considered gifting. But I guess that is history since she's graduating soon, and you've written your last tuition check.

The issue is that you'd face a potential gift tax, since you are planning to give your daughter more than the annual gift tax exclusion. That's $14,000 for the 2013 tax year or $28,000 for a married couple filing jointly who elects to split gifts. If you split gifts, you each must file Internal Revenue Service Form 709, even if half of the split gift is less than the amount of the annual exclusion.

Either way, the money you give to your daughter over the annual exclusion amount also requires that you both file Form 709. You won't owe tax on the gift in the 2013 tax year, but your lifetime unified credit for gifting is reduced by the amount of the gift tax. If you don't do your own tax returns, work with your tax professional to make sure you did this correctly.

There may be a way to set up a 529 account to pay off loans taken out this year for this year's qualified higher education expenses. Section 529 plans let you make gifts larger than the annual exclusion limit for a beneficiary and treat it as if you made it over five calendar years for gift tax purposes.

You would set up a 529 account if there were state income tax benefits associated with making such contributions to the plan. There are also gifting implications here, and you would have to be able to contribute to a plan that has minimum holding periods short enough that it would allow you to pay off the loans she took out this year for qualified higher education expenses she incurred this year with money from the 529 college savings plan. I'd work with a tax professional on this aspect of gifting too.

Many bodies still in collapsed Bangladesh building

SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? Emergency workers hauling large concrete slabs from a collapsed 8-story building said Tuesday they expect to find many dead bodies when they reach the ground floor, indicating the death toll will be far more than the official 386. One estimate said it could be as high as 1,400.

Hundreds of people waited patiently at the site of the collapsed building for news of missing relatives, holding their pictures and identity cards as they watched cranes lifting sections of ceilings and floors from the rubble. Emergency workers in hard hats used drilling and cutting machines to break up the slabs into manageable pieces.

Ratna Akhtar , looking for her husband at a nearby school ground, wailed: "Give me my husband back. At least I want to see his dead body if not alive."

The illegally constructed, 8-story Rana Plaza collapsed on the morning of April 24, bringing down the five garment factories inside. Together, they employed 3,122 workers, but it is not clear how many were on duty at the time of the tragedy. It was the deadliest disaster to hit Bangladesh's garment industry that is worth $20 billion annually and supplies global retailers.

Roughly 2,900 people have been accounted for -- about 2,500 survivors and the 386 dead. It is not clear how many people worked in other offices in the building which also housed a bank and many shops.

Most of the bodies have been handed to families except 49 that have been kept at the morgue of state-run Dhaka Medical College Hospital for identification. Mahmud Ali of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society said many more bodies are believed trapped under the rubble of the building, judging by stench of decomposing flesh still emanating.

Zillur Rahman Chowdhury, a Dhaka district administrator, put the number of missing at 100, based on the information received from the families of the missing.

But volunteers from the Social Welfare Club based at the Jahangirnagar University say the official tally is incomplete because people have little faith in the government and don't bother reporting their loss.

Ahsan Imu, a volunteer at the club, said that based on information gathered from families at the site at least 1,000 people may be missing. However, he cautioned that there may be some duplication in the list.

On Monday, a Bangladesh court give police 15 days to interrogate the owner of a building, Mohammed Sohel Rana. He was arrested a day earlier in a border town as he tried to flee to India. He is being questioned on charges of negligence, illegal construction and forcing workers to join work. His father, Abdul Khaleque, was also arrested on suspicion of aiding Rana to force people to work in a dangerous building.

The crimes he is accused of carry a maximum punishment of seven years. More charges could be added later.

Rana had permission to build a 5-story building but added three more floors illegally. Huge cracks appeared in the building on April 23 but Rana told tenants it was safe to go in. A bank and some first-floor shops closed after police ordered an evacuation. But managers of the garment factories on the upper floors told workers to continue their shifts.

Police have also arrested four owners of three factories.

The death toll surpassed a fire five months ago that killed 112 people and brought widespread pledges to improve worker-safety standards. But since then, very little has changed in Bangladesh.

"I think it is a wakeup call for the nation, a wakeup call for the industry and for the trade unions," said Shirin Akter, founding president of Karmojibi Nari, a Dhaka-based Bangladeshi group that lobbies for the rights of women in the workplace.

Bangladesh's garment industry was the third-largest in the world in 2011, after China and Italy, having grown rapidly in the past decade.

Among the garment makers in the building were Phantom Apparels, Phantom Tac, Ether Tex, New Wave Style and New Wave Bottoms. Altogether, they produced several million shirts, pants and other garments a year.

The New Wave companies, according to their website, make clothing for several major North American and European retailers.

Britain's Primark has acknowledged it was using a factory in Rana Plaza. It said in a statement Monday that it is providing emergency aid and will pay compensation to victims who worked for its supplier.

"Primark notes the fact that its supplier shared the building with those of other retailers. We are fully aware of our responsibility. We urge these other retailers to come forward and offer assistance," it said.

Canadian company Loblaw Inc., which also got its Joe Fresh clothing line made in Rana Plaza, said Monday it will ensure that victims and their families "receive benefits now and in the future."

Spokeswoman Julija Hunter said the company is still working out the details, but plans to deliver support "in the best and most meaningful way possible."

Wal-Mart said none of its clothing had been authorized to be made in the facility, but it is investigating whether there was any unauthorized production.

Nintendo now selling refurbished 3DS and DSi XL

It's easy for us to go shopping for a refurbished Nintendo handheld at stores and auction houses, but not if we're looking for a huge bargain: small discounts and dodgy quality often make it wiser to buy new instead. Nintendo has just offered us some better reasons to scrimp and save by quietly offering both the DSi XL and 3DS through its refurb shop. The used (and occasionally bruised) systems respectively start at $100 and $130, or $30 and $40 less than they'd normally cost -- enough to justify splurging on a game or two. While the selection is currently scarce, we'll set that qualm aside when everything gets the same year-long warranty as a new unit. About the only debate left is whether or not we're looking for a dedicated game machine in the first place.

Re-Mission 2 games reimagine how to help kids survive cancer ...

HopeLab is taking a blast at cancer with the relaunch of its titles that help kids deal with having cancer. More than five years in the making, Re-Mission 2 consists of six free-to-play online minigames launching tomorrow with a host of support from charities, medical researchers, and major corporations.

The new titles are on the leading edge of ?games for health,? a movement to take the engagement of gaming and turn it to the cause of improving health.

The six releases are bite-sized casual experiences that combine fun and cancer education. They have the backing of scientific research and input from cancer patients. The games are the spiritual sequels to Re-Mission, a PC offering released in 2006 from HopeLab, a health charity that eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam Omidyar set up.

Re-Mission 2 2The new titles deal with big changes in the way people play games. They include iPad versions since kids in hospitals often can?t easily access a PC. They are also accessible on the Web from any device that can connect online, and they don?t require a huge time commitment.

The games apply insights from a brain-imaging study that HopeLab and Stanford University researchers published in 2012. The study showed that the original Re-Mission, a game where kids can kill cancer cells in the body, strongly activates brain circuits involved in positive motivation. Such motivation helps kids stick to their prescribed treatments of chemotherapy and antibiotic treatments. Re-Mission basically helps them understand why it?s important to stay positive and be disciplined about anti-cancer treatments.

Steve Cole is a doctor who helped organize the whole effort. He is vice president of research and development at HopeLab and a professor of medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles. He said in an interview with VentureBeat that a better attitude contributes directly to getting a biological edge on cancer.

?The goal is to give kids hope for power and control over cancer,? Cole said. ?It is a souped up version of Re-Mission, using a different recipe for impact based on what we learned about?motivation, emotion, and harnessing positive psychology.?

The new games include input from 120 teens and young adults with cancer across the U.S. Those patients helped contribute to making the games more fun.

?A lot of times we don?t really want to take our meds. We wonder, ?What is this doing? Where is it going? I?m tired of it. It?s just going to make me throw up,?? said Jose Guevera, an 18-year-old who went through?cancer treatment and helped design the Re-Mission 2 games. ?But when you see on the screen and visualize what?s happening inside your body, and what the chemotherapy?s doing ? you?re not looking at a PowerPoint, you?re playing a game, and you?re being chemo, and you?re killing your bad cells. I think Re-Mission 2 can really help a lot of us.?

In each Re-Mission 2 game, players go inside the body to defeat cancer with weapons like chemotherapy, antibiotics, and the body?s immune cells. The action has direct parallels to real-world cancer treatments, and it tells patients that one of the big reasons that kids don?t survive cancer is because they don?t stick to their treatments.

Re-Mission 2 3?Combining high-quality science and compelling game design to help young cancer patients fight their disease was at the core of my vision for the original Re-Mission, and I?m delighted to see that continue with Re-Mission 2,? said Pam Omidyar, HopeLab founder and board chair. ?HopeLab science has improved our understanding of how technology can be harnessed to catalyze the innate resilience of young people, even in the face of extreme adversity, like cancer. The Re-Mission 2 games have been tested with kids across the country, including my own, and we hope people have as much fun playing them as we have.?

All six games are available on the Re-Mission 2 website, and three of them are also compatible with the iPad. Players can unlock a bonus pack of downloadable games for Mac and the Windows PC.

HopeLab headed the effort. Additional funding came from Vivendi, Livestrong Foundation, the Entertainment Software Association, Cigna, Genentech, and the?Annenberg Foundation.

?When I first was introduced to the Re-Mission program, I was just amazed,? said Ernest Katz, Director of Behavioral Sciences at Children?s Hospital Los Angeles. ?Here is a product that kids can engage with in a fun way, and it helps them learn about what they needed to do in order to get better.?

A study of the original Re-Mission game showed that it improved treatment adherence and boosted self-efficacy in cancer patients, according to published findings from the medical journal Pediatrics in 2008.

?Kids were using their antibiotics, and we were happy about that,? Cole said.

Cole said one of the best things that came from the first effort were a series of studies that measured impact. Groups will study the new games?as well.

?We looked at what worked,? he said. ?Knowledge games weren?t the pathway through which we got improved behavior. We changed the view of chemotherapy from being a symbol of having cancer to having bullets in your gun or bombs you can drop to kill cancer.?

In other words, the kids had to like the titles to learn from them. HopeLab contacted a series of game developers, and just about all of them were able to help.

?We know that technology can be a powerful force for good in the lives of young people,? said Jenny Lai, vice president of the ESA Foundation. ?Re-Mission 2 embodies that promise. The ESA Foundation became HopeLab?s first Re-Mission distribution funding partner in 2006. We are delighted to extend our partnership to support the launch of Re-Mission 2.?

The games include:

Re-Mission 2: Nanobot?s Revenge:?You play a microscopic nanobot that blasts all types of cancer using an arsenal that includes?chemo, radiation, and targeted cancer-drug?attacks to crush the malignant forces of the Nuclear Tyrant. The Nerdook Productions-developed game has 12 levels plus a bonus level.

Re-Mission 2: Leukemia:?The Leukemia Monster has sent waves of cancer minions to attack the body?s bone marrow. You can save precious stem cell colonies and cleanse the bone marrow of all leukemia cells with arcade-style play. It has 20 levels. Nerdook also developed the experience.

Re-Mission 2: Nano Dropbot:?You guide a flying dropbot?on search-and-destroy missions to kill cancer cells where they lurk. Nano Dropbot has 15 levels and 10 bonus levels. Tinime Games built the title.

Re-Mission 2: Stem Cell Defender:?You have to defend white blood cells from a bacteria invasion using your flying nano-fling bot. Stem Cell Defender, from Borne Games, has 10 levels and a bonus level.

Re-Mission 2: Feeding Frenzy:?You have to drive a colony of powerful chemo and leukocytes to devour colonies of bacteria and cancer cells. The Tinime Games-developed Feeding Frenzy has 10 levels.

Re-Mission 2: Special Ops:?You can unlock this game pack by clearing five levels of each of the other Re-Mission 2 games. The title is an arcade-style shooter where you destroy cancerous invaders with an array of weapons. Novaleaf Game Studio created this adventure, and it has 15 levels.

Cole said that the Flash-based titles will run on mobile devices through cloud-based streaming technology. He also stated that the games do not require federal approval because they are not treatments that go inside your body.

?It?s akin to counseling, exercise, and weight-loss advice,? Cole said.

OpenStreetMap Makes It Easier To Suggest Corrections, New HTML5-Based Editor Coming Later This Year

openstreetmap_logoOpenStreetMap, the Wikipedia-like crowdsourced mapping service, announced a couple of changes today that will make it easier for anybody to contribute. Starting today, you can easily suggest corrections when you browse maps on OpenStreetMap. In the spirit of crowdsourcing, these proposed corrections will be farmed out to the service’s volunteers. Then the organizations, writes?Harry Wood?in today’s announcement, “a local mapper can visit the location to check the suggested information, and then update the map.” This new feature is meant to allow more users to participate in the mapping process, even if they don’t have the time or skills to get involved in the details of creating a local map. Users who spot issues just have to click on the “add a note” button in the bottom-right corner of the window and suggest the change. It’s worth noting that these suggestions don’t have to follow any specific format and users don’t need to have an OpenStreetMap account to suggest changes. Notes, Wood writes, “are free-form natural text, read by other people, making this a very simple way to communicate any problems we notice about the map without needing to get to grips with OpenStreetMap and its tagging system.” Later this year, OpenStreetMap also plans to launch a new HTML5-based map editor, which will also make it significantly easier to create and edit maps. ?By making it even easier to add to the map, we?re increasing the amount of on-the-ground knowledge we can capture ? further distancing OSM from the traditional map data companies and their lack of local expertise,” Simon Poole, the chairman of the OpenStreetMap Foundation said in a canned statement today. Google Maps, of course, also allows users to report problems with its maps, and the company constantly updates its maps. It can often take quite a while before the team gets to look at all the reports that come in.

Android widens lead in Q1 as iPhone loses market share, Windows Phone gains ground

Windows Phone 8 U.S. Sales

Microsoft?s Windows Phone 8 platform has slowly increased its market share since being released last October. The latest numbers from Kantar Worldpanel found that the operating system accounted for 5.6% of sales in the United States in the first quarter of 2013, up 1.9 percentage points from the same period in 2012.?Android smartphones continue to dominate the market, increasing 1.4 percentage points and accounting for 49.3% of all smartphone sales, compared to the iPhone?s?market share, which fell from 44.6% in Q1 2012 to 43.7% last quarter.

[More from BGR: Google Fiber forces Time Warner?s hand yet again]

?As iOS and Android continue to battle it out for top-selling smartphone OS, we have seen Windows steadily grow over the past year and is now at its highest sales share figure so far,? Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst Mary-Ann Parlato said. ?Windows strength appears to be the ability to attract first time smartphone buyers, upgrading from a feature phone.?

[More from BGR: Microsoft shows off reality-distorting tech that turns entire living rooms into Xbox games [video]]

First time smartphone buyers accounted for 52% of Windows Phone customers, while 55% of iPhone users and 51% of Android buyers upgraded from another smartphone.

?While the differences between these figures are small, with over half of the US market still owning a feature phone, it?s likely that many will upgrade over the coming year, which will ultimately contribute to more growth for the Windows brand.? Parlato added.

Nokia has benefited greatly from increased Windows Phone sales, accounting for 4% of smartphones sold in the first quarter, up from just 1% in 2012. The firm notes, however, that Android smartphone sales are expected to spike in the second quarter with the release of devices like the Galaxy S4 and HTC One.

Comparing proteins at a glance: Technique for easy comparisons of proteins in solution

Apr. 29, 2013 ? A revolutionary X-ray analytical technique that enables researchers at a glance to identify structural similarities and differences between multiple proteins under a variety of conditions has been developed by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). As a demonstration, the researchers used this technique to gain valuable new insight into a protein that is a prime target for cancer chemotherapy.

"Proteins and other biological macromolecules are moving machines whose power is often derived from how their structural conformations change in response to their environment," says Greg Hura, a scientist with Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division. "Knowing what makes a protein change has incredible value, much like knowing that stepping on a gas pedal makes the wheels of a car spin."

Hura led the development of what is being called a structural comparison map for use with small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), an imaging technique for obtaining structural information about proteins and protein complexes in solution. Cynthia McMurray, a biologist with Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division, provided the cancer-relevant protein used to test the new SAXS structural comparison map.

Says McMurray, "In biology, the first step in correcting a problem, such as the formation of a cancerous lesion, is understanding the conditions under which the problem arose. With the SAXS structural comparison map, we can compare multiple protein structures en masse and quickly identify areas of interest."

Greg Hura, Helen Budworth and Cynthia McMurray, shown here at the Advanced Light Source, developed a structural comparison map for SAXS imaging and tested it on a chemotherapeutic target protein. (Photo by Roy Kaltschmidt, Berkeley Lab)

Hura is the lead author and McMurray one of two corresponding authors of a paper in the journal Nature Methods that describes this research. The paper is titled "Comprehensive objective maps of macromolecular conformations by quantitative SAXS analysis." Also a corresponding author is John Tainer, who holds joint appointments with Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division and the Scripps Research Institute. The other authors are Helen Budworth, Kevin Dyer, Robert Rambo and Michal Hammel.

In perhaps no other area of science does the maxim "function follows form" hold more true than for proteins and protein complexes. The structural conformations created by the folding, twisting and turning of a protein's amino acid chain can allow or prevent the protein from doing what it's supposed to do and this can mean the difference between a healthy and an unhealthy cell. A protein can assume multiple distinct conformational states as it undergoes various chemical processes such as phosphorylation, nucleotide or ligand binding, ATP hydrolysis or the formation of complexes.

The most widely used technique for determining a protein's structure remains crystallography, but many proteins and protein complexes can't be crystalized. Furthermore, though precise, crystallography is a low-throughput process that can only capture one conformational state at a time. Enter SAXS, a high-throughput technique that can image any protein or protein complex in solution under any condition, and provide nanoscale resolution for distinguishing and characterizing the different conformational states that flexible biological macromolecules such as proteins can assume.

"With SAXS, there are relatively few restraints on conditions, construction, concentration or solution chemistry," Hura says. "However, analytical methods have not kept pace with the hardware. While there are many factors that may induce a protein to undergo structural changes, these factors are difficult to predict. Our structural comparison map technique gives us a high-throughput screening capability. The combination of SAXS and our maps allows us to highlight those factors that make the biggest difference in structural conformations. We're also able to track trends and identify intermediate states and other factors that shift equilibrium from one structure to another."

The data in a structural comparison map is presented in the form of a color-coded checkerboard with similarity scores displayed as gradients moving from red, indicating high, to white, indicating low, and various shades of orange and yellow in between.

"With structural comparison maps, I can immediately see which structures under which conditions are the same and which are not," says McMurray. "The maps provide both structural and chemical information and enable us to identify those conformations we should be looking at."

To test the structural conformation map technique, co-author Budworth, a member of McMurray's research group, prepared samples of a protein known as MutS?, an inviting chemotherapeutic target because of its ability to remove problematic DNA that can lead to cancer and other genetic mutations.

"MutS? is a heterodimer whose two macromolecules undergo an ordered series of nucleotide-dependent steps to initiate DNA repair," Budworth says. "Each discrete nucleotide-bound state is a conformational state decision point that primes the next pathway step. A mechanistic understanding of these steps is crucial to learning how cells avoid mutation."

Says McMurray, "Initially this was a very big puzzle because MutS? had no crystal structure, nor could we take a look at any one conformational state and say this is good or this is bad. The structural conformation maps allowed us to characterize the different conformational states individually and then compare them to one another. We discovered that DNA has surprisingly little impact on MutS? conformational structures, a fact that was not evident from biochemical measurements, but obvious when examining the maps."

From the SAXS imaging and structural conformation map analysis, McMurray and her group believe that DNA is sculpted to the protein conformation and that nucleotide-binding drives MutS? conformational changes. This, they say, holds implications for future cancer therapies.

The MutS? samples were subjected to SAXS at the SIBYLS beamline of Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source, a synchrotron that generates premier beams of X-ray and ultraviolet light for scientific research. The acronym SIBYLS stands for Structurally Integrated Biology for Life Sciences. The beamline is maintained by Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division under the direction of corresponding author Tainer.

Says Tainer, "The structural comparison map technique is a big step forward in the development of tools that will help biologists use the full potential of the awesome throughput we expect to achieve with the next generation of light sources."

This research was supported by funds from the DOE Office of Science and from the National Institutes of Health.

Wife accidentally kills husband during gun lesson: Police

David Chang, NBCPhiladelphia.com

A fun night for a Pennsylvania couple turned deadly after police say the woman accidentally shot and killed her husband.

On Friday, around 9 p.m., police say Michael Wanko, 43, and Michele Wanko, 42, were ?casually drinking? vodka and lemonade together inside their home on West Roland Road in Parkside, Penn. Around 3:30 a.m., police say the couple went into their basement so that Michael could show his wife how to use a semiautomatic pistol. The couple went into a work room where several weapons were kept inside a safe.

?He took several of the weapons out, handguns and was demonstrating to her how the weapon worked as far as taking the magazine out, making sure it was safe, and how to pull the slide back,? said Parkside Police Chief John Egan.

As Michael reached into a safe to grab a gun, police say Michele picked up another gun and pulled the slide back, just as her husband had instructed her.

?When she let go of the slide, the weapon went off,? said Chief Egan.

Michael was struck in the upper chest. At the time, police say, the couple?s 2-year-old and 5-year-old sons were sleeping upstairs. Police say the 5-year-old was awakened by his mother?s frantic screams as she called 911.

Police arrived at the home around 4 a.m. Michael was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Michele was charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime. She was processed at the Chester City Jail and released on $250,000 unsecured bail. Her two children are currently staying with relatives.

Police say the gun Michele used was turned over to the Delaware County ballistics unit where investigators would ?ascertain if the weapon malfunctioned or if it operated properly.?

Neighbors described the Wanko family as ?nice people? who always did things with their children and were well respected throughout the neighborhood. Chief Egan says police were called to their home a year ago for a domestic dispute but that it was only ?a shouting match between the two.? No one was charged in that incident.

Dell investors may still gain after Blackstone pullout: Barron's

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dell shareholders could still stand to profit even after Blackstone Group LP withdrew its bid to buy the world's No. 3 personal computer maker more than a week ago, Barron's said on Sunday.

On April 19, Blackstone's move knocked Dell shares to a two-month low and narrowed the fight for Dell between activist investor Carl Icahn and the company's founder Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners, the newspaper said.

Blackstone dropped its bid for Dell at $14.25 a share, citing deteriorating demand for PCs.

On Friday, Dell's stock closed at $13.35, below the $13.65-a-share proposed buyout from its founder and Silver Lake.

"Dell shares now look appealing because investors stand to make a small profit if the Michael Dell-led offer gets approved," the paper said in its April 29 edition.

Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management, Dell's largest independent shareholder that complained the buyout offer being too low, have valued the company at more than $20 a share, Barron's said.

Icahn proposed in early March, about a month after the Dell/Silver Lake's announced its bid, for a $9-a-share special dividend. He has not made a formal offer for Dell, which Barron's said could involve a tender of 58 percent of the PC marker's stock at $15 per share.

If a Icahn offer does not emerge, Wall Street analysts reckon Dell might fall as low as $10 a share, the paper said.

The planned buyout, which has angered Southeastern and other major investors, faces a tough shot of being approved, excluding its founder who owns 16 percent of the company, according to the paper.

If Dell/Silver Lake bid fails, it will be "welcome news for Dell investors, who could then benefit from alternatives that offer immediate and long-term benefits that probably far exceed $13.65 a share," Barron's said.

Final Four: It's Louisville and The Other Guys

ATLANTA (AP) ? Tip-off time is nearing. Time to see if Louisville can live up to the hype or one of those other guys can turn the Final Four into their party.

The Cardinals are not only the favorites to win the national championship, they've become sentimental favorites, as well, after rallying around Kevin Ware, the guard whose compound leg fracture in last week's regional final turned stomachs, while also warming hearts and setting the story line for this week in Atlanta.

"With Kevin going down, especially the way he did, it's just making us play harder," Louisville forward Wayne Blackshear said Friday.

In Saturday's opening national semifinal at the Georgia Dome, the Cardinals ? No. 1 seeds in the entire tournament ? play ninth-seeded Wichita State, which has sprung upsets of Gonzaga and Ohio State en route to that program's first Final Four appearance since 1965.

The second semifinal pits a pair of No. 4 seeds, Michigan and Syracuse, two programs with plenty of tradition but largely considered subplots in a week dominated by Louisville and Ware. (To say nothing of the news going down at Rutgers, where video of coach Mike Rice hitting players led to his ouster, the departure of the athletic director and other problems.)

"I'm just glad to know Kevin Ware now even more because he's probably the most famous person I know," Louisville guard Peyton Siva said. "You know, when you have Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama call you, it's pretty good to say you know that person."

Wichita State has one player (Carl Hall) who salvaged his career after working in a light bulb factory and two more (Ron Baker and Malcolm Armstead) who paid their way to come to school and started on the team as walk-ons. Its coach has invited fans into the locker room after big wins. In most years, this would be the school with all the makings of a team the whole country can get behind.

Problem is, in this case, Louisville and Ware are already tugging on America's heart strings.

"We're brothers for life," swingman Luke Hancock said. "I have that guy's back in any situation. I know he has mine."

Louisville (33-5) is a 10?-point favorite against the Shockers (30-8).

The second semifinal is expected to be more competitive. Michigan (30-7) is a 2-point favorite against Syracuse (30-9). The Wolverines are back at the Final Four for the first time since the Fab Five led them there in 1993. Syracuse returns on the 10-year anniversary of its only title, led by Carmelo Anthony.

The featured players in this game: For Michigan, Trey Burke, The Associated Press Player of the Year. And for Syracuse, well, it's coach Jim Boeheim's 2-3 zone defense.

How will Boeheim try to stop Burke, whose long-range 3-pointer against Kansas sent the game into overtime and set the stage for the Wolverines run to Atlanta?

"I don't pay attention to matchups," Boeheim said. "It's teams. Teams play."

Indeed, during interviews Friday, the Syracuse players sounded plenty confident that their team could stop Burke and the rest of the Wolverines, who followed their victory over top-seeded Kansas with a 20-point blowout of Florida in the regional final.

"It's tough to go against our zone when you've never seen it before," forward C.J. Fair said. "We want to force him to do some things he's not done before."

While Burke may be the most-watched player in the second game, all eyes figure to be on Ware in the opener, even though he'll never touch a basketball.

He lives near Atlanta and traveled with the team for the Final Four. When the Cardinals arrived Wednesday night, he was in a wheelchair and the plan is for him to be on the bench for the game.

Louisville faces some practical concerns not having Ware in the lineup.

He was the main substitute for Russ Smith and Siva, the guards who guide the Louisville press and its offense, as well.

"Our players totally understand the challenge that lies ahead with this Wichita State team," coach Rick Pitino said. "We understand with Kevin out that we not only have to play very hard, we have to play very, very smart."

Did you know it was my BIRTHDAY month? Yes, I have a birthday month. Why not? A little note from Anthropologie.?

I don't save much, but I do admit to hoarding magazines. They are all over my house. For whatever reason it's hard for me to throw them away. Here is one organized stash.?

This little pumpkin is spoiled. Now that I work from my home office she has been sleeping in VERY late. I have to pull her out of bed when I take my lunch. One day she stayed in bed until after one o'clock.?

Speaking of the spoiled Mrs.Peanut Butters?Nick made her a mini-pancake last weekend.?

And she certainly enjoyed it. Breakfast in bed for this little Chihuahua.?

Anyone that knows me knows that I have a tendency to overwork myself. I have to force myself to take breaks and last Sunday I took a little siesta before starting round two of my day. I'm planning to work in more down time this summer so that I can spend time with my friends and family. ?

One of my lovely clients is putting this Jeffrey Court backsplash in her kitchen. It's like a pair of simple diamond stud earrings. I love the classic look with the settle sparkle from the crushed glass.?

A photo of my papa that I had blown up and framed.?

And here it is framed. Black, white, gold!?

(AP) ? For the first time in the event's 183-year history, a woman led a prayer Saturday at the semiannual gathering of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jean A. Stevens led the morning session's closing prayer for the more than 100,000 Mormons gathered in Salt Lake City for the two-day general conference, and the millions more watching via satellite, radio or Internet broadcast.

Among other church roles, Stevens is member of a three-person board that advises and assists parents on teaching their children about the faith, which has more than 14 million members worldwide.

A feminist group launched a campaign earlier this year asking church leaders to let women lead the opening and closing prayer ? a first for the conference ? as a symbol of gender equality.

Women hold leadership positions in the Mormon church but aren't allowed to be bishops or presidents of stakes, which are geographic areas similar to Catholic dioceses. At past conferences, women have regularly given speeches and could pray in the audience.

The "Let Women Pray" campaign was launched in January from the same group that drew national attention in December by urging women to wear pants to church rather than skirts or dresses to raise awareness about what they perceive as gender inequality within Mormon culture.

Amber Whiteley, 23, of St. Louis, was one of the campaign organizers and said Saturday she was "thrilled" and couldn't stop smiling when she heard the news.

"I think it shows that it was really compassionate on the church's behalf ... that women are really important in the church and that women's voices matter," she said Saturday.

It also shows that "women's prayers matter as much as men's," Whiteley said.

Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said Mormon leaders late last year decided who would be leading the conference prayers, which is before the women prayer campaign was launched.

Hawkins did not elaborate on why Stevens was selected, but said leaders of the church are the ones chosen to give the invocation and benediction.

Earlier Saturday, Thomas S. Monson, the faith's president, announced the church is planning to build two new temples, in Rio de Janeiro and Cedar City, Utah.

Temples are considered sacred to Latter-day Saints and are used for religious rituals including proxy baptisms, marriage ceremonies and other rites designed to strengthen church teachings.

The exact locations of the new buildings will be announced later, the church said. Worldwide, there are 141 temples in operation and 29 under construction.

The newly announced temple in Rio de Janeiro will be the eighth planned or operating temple in Brazil, where there are more than 1.1 million Mormons. Six temples are up and running in the country, and a seventh is planned in Fortaleza.

The planned temple in Cedar City, in southwest Utah, will be the 17th temple operating or planned in the state. The church previously announced construction of temples in Payson and Provo. Nearly 2 million members of the faith live in Utah, where the church headquarters is located.

Monson also announced during his opening address Saturday that the church has created 58 new missions to accommodate swelling numbers of missionaries.

At the last general conference in October, church officials announced a lowering of the minimum age for missionaries: from 21 to 19 for women, and from 19 to 18 for men.

Church leaders and outside scholars believe that decision could be a landmark leading to many more women serving missions.

The church says applications for new missions are up twofold since the announcement. About half of all new applications have come from women. Previously, only 15 percent of missionaries were women.

"The response of our young people has been remarkable and inspiring," Monson said.

As of April 4, more than 65,000 Mormon missionaries were serving around the world, Monson said. More than 20,000 additional missionaries have been called to serve, while another 6,000 are in the interview process.

The semiannual conference, taking place Saturday and Sunday, offers Mormons words of inspiration and guidance for daily living from the faith's senior leaders. Besides the thousands attending in person, millions more participate in the meeting through satellite, radio or Internet broadcast translated into more than 90 languages.

7 Recipes for Chinese Food

Photo: Linda Grove/Hulton Archive/Getty Images

My book club always reads food related books, and sometimes we get together and see food related films. This week we went to see Ang Lee's 1994 Taiwanese film Eat Drink Man Woman. Food is pretty much one of the characters in the film and the scenes of food preparation were breathtaking to me. By the time I left the theatre at 10:00 pm it took all of my strength of keep from stopping at the 24 hour grocery to buy the ingredients for a Chinese banquet that I wanted to make right that minute. As it was, I made myself a bowl of noodles before I went to bed, which I have never done before in my life.

To say I have been obsessed with Chinese food since that viewing would be a wild understatement. My husband is deliriously happy, because Chinese food is his all time favourite cuisine. Luckily for me, I have Fuchsia Dunlop's new cookbook Every Grain of Rice, so my obsession can be paired with new recipes to try. Last night I made red braised pork which I will share with you this weekend and hopefully tonight I will make some dumplings.

I have posted many, many recipes for Chinese food over the years, but I have lost most of the older photos, so I am rounding up some more recent posts, many of which come from Fuchsia Dunlop's three cookbooks, Land of Plenty, The Revolutionary Chinese Cookbook.

1. Beef Slivers with Cilantro

Photo: Kelly Rossiter

Like so many recipes for Chinese food, the greatest time allotted for this recipe of beef slivers with cilantro is in the chopping beforehand. The actual cooking time is quite minimal, and you can have this meal on the table mid-week in less than half an hour. If you love cilantro, this is the recipe for you.

2 Sesame Green Beans

Photo: Kelly Rossiter

I can remember when my nephew was a little guy (he's 30 now!) his mother used to say "eat five green beans and then you can have dessert". I think he might have even eaten six of these sesame green beans. I often make extra green beans because I like them cold in a mustard sauce, and this was a cold salad. I think it would be equally delicious hot.

3. Hunan Style Tofu

Photo: Kelly Rossiter

I like this recipe for Hunan style tofu because you cook the tofu first to make it a bit crispy and then add the sauce, so it has a slightly different texture than usual. If your kids aren't big fans of tofu, you can always use chicken for this recipe. You might find the Thai chilies a bit hot for the kids, so you can always reduce them amount, or leave them out entirely.

4. Golden Coins

Photo: Kelly Rossiter

This recipe for golden coins was a revelation to me. The hard boiled eggs puff up and get crispy on the outside while remaining soft and eggy in the middle. This is a really beautiful recipe for a light lunch, and they are lovely to look at as well.

5. Should Pole Carrying Noodles

Photo: Kelly Rossiter

I've made this old family favourite of shoulder pole-carrying noodles so many times, I could do it in my sleep. It's such a perfect recipe for the family because the seasonings are placed into each bowl, so mom and dad can have a spicier version without any extra effort. It is still the recipe I make when I've had a particularly busy day and don't want to have to think about what to have for dinner.

6. Dan Dan Noodles

Photo: Kelly Rossiter

I love Chinese noodles and I love them even more when someone else makes them for me. My future daughter-in-law made these dan dan noodles for me, adapting the recipe using tofu to make it vegetarian. If you like you can use ground pork instead of tofu, either way, this is a fantastic dish.

7. Mushroom and Kale Wontons

Photo: Kelly Rossiter

Watching Eat Drink Man Woman, I realized that I will never get the oil in my wok hot enough to do the serious deep-frying that happens in the film. You really need a commercial range to get enough heat, but I still try from time to time. Although I don't fry a lot, there are some things that just cry out for it. These mushroom and kale wontons fit the bill. This is a great recipe to make with kids who are interested in helping out in the kitchen. They are really easy to make, but a bit time consuming, so set them a little work station and have them manufacture these little wontons themselves.

Kosovo too high a price to pay for EU, Serbian church says

By Matt Robinson

BELGRADE (Reuters) - Serbia's Orthodox Church warned on Saturday against a 'betrayal' of Kosovo, piling pressure on the ruling coalition as it weighs whether to cede the country's last foothold in its former province in exchange for talks on joining the European Union.

The appeal by the patriarch comes before a Tuesday deadline for the government to tell the EU whether it accepts a plan to tackle Kosovo's ethnic partition between its Albanian majority and a small northern pocket populated by Serbs.

Serbia considers Kosovo, steeped in history and myth, the cradle of the Serb nation and its Orthodox Christian faith.

But Albanians are its 90-percent majority, many of them Muslims. They broke away in war in 1998-99 and Kosovo finally declared independence in 2008, but Serbia still has a fragile hold on a northern pocket where some 50,000 Serbs live.

Rejection of the plan could cost Serbia a coveted place at talks on joining the EU, a process that would drive reform and help lure investors to the struggling Serbian economy, the biggest in the former Yugoslavia.

"The most important pre-election and post-election promise made by you, who received a mandate from the people to steer the Serbian ship in these tumultuous times, was that you would never, under any circumstances, surrender, betray or sell out Kosovo, historical Old Serbia," Patriarch Irinej said in a letter carried by the state news agency Tanjug and published on the church's website.

It was addressed to Serbia's nationalist president, Tomislav Nikolic, Socialist Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and the leader of the largest party in the coalition, Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.

ETHNIC PARTITION

"No Serbian leadership, including today's, has the right or mandate to agree to the kind of conditions that no other EU candidate country has been set. The entry ticket is too expensive," the letter said.

"Serbia must not agree to pay such a price upfront for goods that might never be delivered."

Serbia is under intense pressure to give up the northern pocket of Kosovo, an ethnic partition that the EU says must end if Belgrade is to make progress towards eventual membership of the bloc.

The Orthodox Church is highly respected in Serbia, gaining in influence as communism gave way to nationalism with the bloody breakup of federal Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

EU-mediated talks between Kosovo and Serbia broke up last week without result. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is due to report back to the EU on April 16, with Serbia's chances of starting accession talks this year riding on a deal being in place by then to tackle the partition.

Prime Minister Dacic is to meet parliamentary caucus leaders on Sunday, Tanjug reported, before chairing a cabinet meeting on Monday.

Serbia lost control over Kosovo in 1999, when NATO launched 11 weeks of air strikes to drive out Serbian forces accused of killing and expelling ethnic Albanians as they tried to crush a guerrilla insurgency.

Belgrade retained de facto control over the Serb-populated north centered on the divided town of Mitrovica.

Mired in recession and desperate for the economic boost of EU accession talks, Serbia has offered to recognize the authority of Pristina over the north, but wants autonomy for the Serbs living there.

Details of the latest proposal are not known, but Serbia has made clear it falls well short of the broad autonomy it sought. The decision has the potential to shatter the ruling coalition and could trigger violence in Kosovo.

A new rocket rises: Orbital's Antares prepared for its first test launch

Brea Reeves / NASA

Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Antares rocket rises from its launch pad at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Virginia's Wallops Island on Saturday. The first Antares launch is scheduled for no earlier than April 17.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

Orbital Sciences Corp. raised the first fully integrated Antares rocket on its Virginia launch pad on Saturday, setting the stage for its maiden flight to orbit later this month. A successful test launch would mark a giant leap toward using the Antares and Orbital's Cygnus cargo capsule to resupply the International Space Station.

If the current schedule holds, Virginia-based Orbital would become the second commercial venture to send its spacecraft to the space station later this year, following in the footsteps of California-based SpaceX. The two companies have received more than hundred of millions of dollars in development funding from NASA under the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, or COTS.

SpaceX completed its COTS testing last year and has moved on to a series of 12 station resupply missions under the terms of a $1.6 billion contract. The second such mission, making use of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon cargo capsule, was successfully conducted last month.

This month's demonstration flight by the Antares will mark a major milestone in Orbital's COTS effort: Components of the rocket have been tested on the ground, but not yet in outer space. On Saturday, the two-stage rocket was rolled out from its integration facility at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and transported to Launch Pad 0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, a mile away. The Antares was then erected on the pad, where it will undergo a series of pre-launch tests.

Brea Reeves / NASA

The Antares rocket is reflected in the water as it passes over a bridge on its way to the launch pad on Saturday.

Liftoff is scheduled for no earlier than April 17. The first flight won't go to the space station, but will merely test the rocket's ability to put a dummy payload in space.??A demonstration flight of the Antares and Cygnus is slated to go to the space station later this year. If that unmanned demonstration mission is completed successfully, Orbital will begin conducting eight cargo resupply flights to the station in accordance with a $1.9 billion contract.

NASA selected SpaceX and Orbital to help fill the resupply gap left by the retirement of the space shuttle fleet in 2011. The station is also being resupplied by robotic Russian cargo capsules as well as European and Japanese transports. A separate NASA program is providing $1.1 billion in support to SpaceX, the Boeing Co. and Sierra Nevada Corp. for the development of crew-capable spaceships.

Fake Twitter Followers Become Multimillion-Dollar Business ...

Far from slowing, the market for fake Twitter followers seems to be taking off.

The fake Twitter follower phenomenon made headlines last summer after Mitt Romney?s Twitter following jumped by 100,000 in a matter of days. That news inspired a number of social media management companies like StatusPeople and SocialBakers to develop Web tools that try to determine what percent of a person?s Twitter followings are fake.

But those sites have hardly deterred people from dealing in the market for fake followers and fake retweets. The market is also becoming more sophisticated. In many cases, high-quality false? Twitter accounts are nearly impossible to discern from the real thing. Those that sell them claim that they can make up to a million dollars in one week.

Andrea Stroppa and Carlo De Micheli, two Italian security researchers, spent the last several months investigating the underground economy for Twitter followers and said they had found a thriving market.

There are now more than two dozen services that sell fake Twitter accounts, but Mr. Stroppa and Mr. De Micheli said they limited themselves to the most popular networks, forums and Web sites, which include Fiverr, SeoClerks, InterTwitter, FanMeNow, LikedSocial, SocialPresence and Viral Media Boost. Based on the number of accounts for sale through those services ? and eliminating overlapping accounts ? they estimate that there are now as many as 20 million fake follower accounts.

Fake followers are typically sold in batches of one thousand to one million accounts. The average price for 1,000 fake followers is $18, according to one study by Barracuda Labs. Mr. Stroppa and Mr. De Micheli said some sellers bragged that they made $2 and $30 per fake account. A conservative estimate, they said, was that fake Twitter followers offered potential for a $40 million to $360 million business.

Mr. Stroppa and Mr. De Micheli explored the underground economy for fake followers. The market functions somewhat like eBay in that sellers receive customer feedback. The researchers said they approached sellers with positive feedback and found that fake followers were typically sold in packages ranging from $1 to $1,000 for 1,000 to one million accounts. For instance, Fiverr sells 1,000 Twitter followers for $5.

Those fake accounts can be sold to multiple buyers ? in fact, buyers prefer that the accounts follow others to make them appear more authentic. Web tools that try to tell fake followers from real ones often look at an account?s inactivity or its following-to-follower ratio. The more people they follow and the more active they are, the more authentic they appear.

?There is now software to create fake accounts,? Mr. De Micheli said in an interview. ?It fills in every detail. Some fake accounts look even better than real accounts do.?

The most coveted fake accounts tweet (or retweet) constantly, have profile pictures and complete bios, and some even link to Web sites that they claim belong to them. But in many cases, a close look reveals that some of the accounts were set up purely to retweet material from specific sites.

?Resellers lately haven?t been selling only accounts and followers, but are now getting into the retweet?business,? Mr. Stroppa and Mr. De Micheli wrote in a report. They said prices range between five retweets a day for $9 per month to $150 a month for 125 daily retweets.

The Twitter account for someone who claims to be Cilia Poon, for example, includes a bio, in Chinese, a link to a Yahoo health blog with Chinese content and has tweeted over 17,000 times ? but each tweet was simply a retweet of a tweet posted by The Next Web, a technology blog (in English), that wrote about the fake Twitter follower phenomenon last December. Each time The Next Web Tweets its content, the Twitter user Cilia Poon retweets its content right away. Digging further they found several more examples of accounts that appear to exist solely to retweet content for The Next Web. (Some more convincing than others.)

Zee Kane, the chief executive of The Next Web, said the company was aware of the accounts but had never paid for fake followers or retweets. He said a likely explanation was that the company had created a tool, called spread.us, that allows people to automatically tweet its content. ?He said the company stopped marketing that tool eight months ago because it did not add quality traffic to the site.

Mr. Stroppa and Mr. De Micheli noted that while Facebook requires that users use a real e-mail address, Twitter does no such thing. To prevent fake accounts, or what are called ?bots,? Twitter asks people trying to create multiple accounts from the same I.P. address to answer a ?captcha.? Captchas ? those puzzles used by e-commerce sites that require people to type in a set of distorted letters and numbers ? are relatively easy for humans to read and retype but difficult for machines to decipher. But the researchers point out that new software can beat captchas, or people can be paid to type them in, in real time, for as little as a penny per captcha, or even less.

The two spoke with one reseller who had written software that could create up to 100,000 new accounts in five days.

?Business is great,? he told them, adding that he had hired a couple of freelance programmers, and that ?a kid?could bypass Twitter?s defenses.?

Jim Prosser, a spokesman for Twitter, said the comparison between Facebook?s and Twitter?s authentication processes was an ill fit.

?Twitter and Facebook differ on concepts of identity,? Mr. Prosser said. ?Facebook ties one person to one account. At Twitter, one individual can have multiple accounts. We have a difference in philosophy.?

Mr. Prosser said Twitter had taken an active role in fighting the biggest sources of malicious and fake content. Last year, the company sued those responsible for five of the most-used spamming tools on the site.

But he also noted the difficulty of telling a fake account from the real thing. ?Forty percent of our user base only consumes content,? he said. ?What looks like a fake account to one individual could actually be someone who is on Twitter purely to follow people ? like my mom, who follows me and my brother, doesn?t have a profile bio and has never actually Tweeted herself.?

He added, ?It?s a hard problem.?
