updated 11:13 a.m. ET Dec. 13, 2011

STOCKHOLM - A Swedish court has handed Utrecht striker Alexander Gerndt a suspended sentence and fined him 80,000 kronor ($11,800) for assaulting his wife on two occasions.

The 25-year old Sweden international was convicted of intentionally striking his wife on the thigh with a football during an outdoor game that turned violent last year, and gripping her by the throat after she destroyed his computer in April.

Both assaults left bruises and marks on the victim.

The Helsingborg District Court also ordered Gerndt to pay 6,700 kronor in damages.

Gerndt had pleaded not guilty. It was not immediately clear whether he would appeal.
