Could the iPhone 5 have a 4-inch screen while keeping the same 4S footprint?

A reader on The Verge, Timothy Collins, had recently posited an interesting theory on how Apple might implement a 4-inch screen in the iPhone 5. Basically, he thought that they could cram a larger touchscreen without changing the basic iPhone 4 chassis or altering the Retina-grade pixel density.
