Paes confirms participation in London Olympics

New Delhi: Leander Paes on Friday confirmed that he will play in London Olympics and has agreed to pair with any team the All India Tennis Association (AITA) chooses.

"It is my dream to be part of my sixth Olympics and I will not let petty politics come in the way of hard work and good tennis," Paes said. Moreover the 1996 bronze medal winner stated that he won't to react to anything said earlier.

Paes confirmation to CNN-IBN comes after three days Sania Mirza wrote a letter showing her displeasure regarding the ongoing tennis fiasco.

Paes said despite being left disheartened he is focussed on playing sport and not politics.

Leander Paes confirms participation in London Olympics

The 39-year-old had threatened to withdraw from the Olympics despite being India' number one doubles player after being paired with a much lower-ranked Vishnu Vardhan for the big event. Paes' partners of choice -- Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna -- refused to combine with him and insisted on being sent as a team themselves.

On Sania's outburst, Paes refused any direct comment, saying, "Every Olympics has some nonsense coming in with it."

"I know how much hard work goes into what I do. (Either) people choose to respect it, which I'm very lucky that India does, (or) people choose to disrespect. That's their problem, not mine," Paes said.

Paes, set to make a record sixth Olympic appearance, said he would look to help Vardhan, who would be making Games' debut in London.

"I don't even know if he has grass-court shoes. So it's a bit of a tough one. But he's a really good kid, I'm happy to play with him.

"Whatever the obstacles are, which I see are going to be many -- he's never been to Wimbledon before -- whatever I can do as an experienced professional athlete to help my partners out, I do," he said.

Moshi Vortex Pro

Moshi is more of a design company than a straight-up audio manufacturer, so you'd be forgiven if you approached its earphone offerings with a healthy dose of skepticism. The Moshi Vortex Pro, however, is a quality pair of earphones that earns its $150 (direct) price tag with strong sonic performance and a thoughtful design that extends beyond the earphones themselves and into the included accessories. There's a tiny bit of distortion at top volumes on deep bass tracks, but it's very slight. For the most part, the Vortex Pro conveys deep bass cleanly, along with crisp, clear highs.

Design
Since Moshi puts such an emphasis on design, it's no surprise that the Vortex Pro looks and feels great. The entire design is clean and feels well-built, with a gray braided cable descending from two sturdy, triangular, metallic earpieces emblazoned with the Moshi logo. It's nice to see a manufacturer shun cheap plastic. The Moshi Vortex Pro's earpieces are made from a steel alloy, which has a pleasant weight to it?you notice it when you hold them but not when you wear them. The braided cloth material used for the cable makes it more durable and less tangle-prone.

Even the eartips are a great value. They're offered in three different sizes in a silicone hybrid material, plus one pair of Memory Foam eartips. The unique silicone carrying case?triangular-shaped, intended for you to wrap the cable around rather than stuff inside a pouch (pictured, right)?is well-designed, and also aimed at cutting down on annoying cable tangles.Moshi Vortex Pro case (But consider yourself warned: It is a dust and pet hair magnet.) Along the right ear's cable, a compartment houses the microphone and Apple iOS device controls for calls, playback, and volume. The 3.5mm connection is narrow enough to work with just about any iPhone case on the market.

Performance
It's easy to expect a company known more for design-centric products to gloss over the details of audio performance, especially when the company slogan is: "Purveyor of Electronics Fashion." Thankfully, Moshi didn't put out a well-designed pair of earphones with poor quality drivers. The sound signature here is a bit on the bass-heavy side, and at absolute top volume, we encountered the slightest bit of distortion on The Knife's deep bass track, "Silent Shout." The distortion was so minor, however, it was hard to pick up on at first?and no one should be listening to music at these levels unless they want to lose their hearing. We'll call the smidge of distortion something to be aware of, but not a real issue.

Despite its healthy bass presence, the Vortex Pro is a crisp-sounding earphone pair, with a bit of a high frequency boost that makes percussion and guitar plucking standout, in particular, on Bill Callahan's latest album, Apocalypse. Earlier recordings of his, where his vocals are more front-and-center, with a more treble-based gravelly tone, are delivered with just the right amount of high-mid frequency edge?never harsh. At high volumes, the overall sound signature can seem a tad too bright on most popular genres. But at reasonable listening levels the overall response is well-balanced.

On John Adams' modern classical piece, "The Chairman Dances," the low frequency boost of the Vortex Pro lends itself nicely to lower-register stringed instruments and deep percussion. The mids and highs are never overshadowed, and the high frequency wooden percussion hits and growl of the brass are all conveyed beautifully and clearly. The aforementioned brightness at higher volumes is not as noticeable on instrumental and classical recordings.

Conclusions
There's not much to dislike about the Moshi Vortex Pro. It's not a sonic masterpiece, but it delivers quality audio performance at moderate volumes cleanly, and it comes with a nice array of accessories, the best of which is the carrying case. In this range, however, you have a plethora of options. The Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ($179.95, 4.5 stars), our current Editors' Choice, is a bit more expensive, but delivers slightly more refined audio, combined with perhaps the most secure fit you'll find on a pair of earphones. If these options are out of your budget, consider the Sony XBA-S65 ($89.99, 4 stars), another secure-fitting in-ear pair that's ideal for exercise, or the AKG K 350 ($79.95, 4 stars)?a great-sounding steal for its low price.

The Vortex Pro is neither overpriced nor a steal. Instead, it delivers the strong audio performance you'd expect in this price range. But it's the extra thought put into its design and accessories, on top of its commendable audio performance, that makes it a standout in this crowded field.

San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, Mayor Ed Lee face off at hearing

SAN FRANCISCO -- Fighting to save his career, Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi told the city's Ethics Commission Friday that he committed a crime by bruising his wife's arm during an argument, but also believed political foes could be behind calls for his prosecution and resignation.

Mayor Ed Lee, who suspended Mirkarimi and city for misconduct Mirkarimi in March after the sheriff pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment in connection with the New Year's Eve argument, testified hours later that it's the mayor's duty to decide on "a case by case basis" whether an elected official's criminal conviction amounts to official misconduct. Lee also said he would find it "extremely difficult" to work with Mirkarimi if he's able to get his job back.

Lee cited Mirkarimi with misconduct and suspended him without pay in March, shortly after the sheriff pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment for bruising his wife's arm during a New Year's Eve dispute.

Lee testified that he suspended Mirkarimi because of the significance of the role of sheriff as one of the top law enforcement positions in the city.

Lee's testimony was interrupted after only about half an hour when commission chairman Benedict Hur announced he'd been instructed to adjourn the session immediately. When the hearing reconvened 90 minutes later, Hur said the commission had been "notified by the San Francisco Police Department that we needed to adjourn the

meeting. There was a security threat that has now been found not to be credible."

Mirkarimi was asked Friday by defense attorney David Waggoner whether he can still be effective as sheriff -- and he said he could.

"I realize the uphill battle that has now been laid in front of me, and I believe that to the eyes of everybody it would seem almost impossible for me to rise to that standard," he said.

Yet, he said, San Francisco has specialized in justice that allows personal redemption, adding: "Never in my wildest dreams did I believe I would become an example of that redemptive process."

The hearing's next public sessions are scheduled for mid-July, although lawyers will spar in coming weeks over whether certain parts of witnesses' written declarations are admissible as evidence. Eventually the five-member Ethics Commission will make a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors, which ultimately will vote on whether to kick Mirkarimi out of office.

Deputy City Attorney Peter Keith questioned Mirkarimi about his early efforts to downplay the situation. "Sheriff, is domestic violence a private family matter?" Keith asked.

"It is not," Mirkarimi replied, acknowledging that saying just that in January sent the wrong message to the public.

The sheriff said that he knew when he made the remark that he had injured his wife -- Venezuelan former telenovela star Eliana Lopez -- and committed a crime.

Mirkarimi agreed that domestic violence is an underreported crime that often remains hidden if witnesses don't come forward. But he testified that he made no efforts to dissuade Ivory Madison, the neighbor who sparked the investigation by giving her videotape of a tearful Lopez to police, or to smear her in the media.

When Lee gave the just-sentenced Mirkarimi a resign-or-be-suspended ultimatum, "you had let down the sheriff's department?" Keith asked.

"Yes," Mirkarimi said. But asked whether he should've resigned, he replied "that given the choice that was presented to me by the mayor, I did exactly as I should."

Later, questioned by Waggoner about the argument, Mirkarimi said: "I wish I could turn back the clock, of course; I feel horrible, ashamed." He also said he made "a terrible mistake" in ever having calling it "a private matter, a family matter.''

Mirkarimi, a San Francisco supervisor from 2005 until his election as sheriff in November, hadn't even been sworn in when he had the altercation with Lopez. He was sentenced to one day in his own jail, three years of probation, one year of domestic-violence counseling, 100 hours of community service and a fine.

High-tech warhead intercepts ballistic missile in test

3 hrs.

A high-tech warhead successfully destroyed a separating ballistic missile in a crucial test of technology to protect against more sophisticated regional ballistic missile threats from North Korea and Iran, the U.S. military reports.

The Standard Missile-3 Block IB interceptor is an upgrade to current ballistic missile defense system technology and part of President Barack Obama's plan to guard NATO's European territory.

For the test, a target missile was launched at 11:15 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time on Tuesday from a missile range on Kauai.?

Following the target launch, a U.S. Navy warship, the USS Lake Erie, in a remote patch of the mid-Pacific Ocean, detected and tracked the missile with its onboard radar, developed a fire control solution and launched the SM-3 Block IB interceptor.

The warship continued to track the target and send trajectory information to the interceptor in-flight.

?The SM-3 maneuvered to a point in space, as designated by the fire control solution, and released its kinectic warhead,? the Department of Defense said in a news release.

?The kinetic warhead acquired the target, diverted into its path, and, using only the force of a direct impact, engaged and destroyed the threat in a hit-to-kill intercept.?

This was the second successful test of the system, following an earlier success in May.?

?Initial indications are that all components performed as designed, resulting in a very accurate intercept,? the military said.

Help! Need advice! - Talk About Marriage

I am in a dilema. I have been with my fiance for six years. We have a 2 and a half year old daughter together. We are supposed to be getting married next march and things have just started going sour. We have definitely had our ups and downs in the six years of being together. After all, being with me isn't easy. I am indeed hot headed and stubborn and basically am a spoiled brat that has to have things her way. Do not get me wrong, I was not always like this. Before I got pregnant, things were great. Then he lost his job and started waiting on me hand and foot to make up for it (especially since I was pregnant and working). I got used to that life (can you really blame me) and it has definitely taken its toll.

In a nut shell, he is basically sick of it. He wanted it to be done he says. I begged and pleaded for him not to go. After making threats about not ever coming back, that i would just leave, he finally decided to stay. He agreed to try and work things out provided I change.

I have been trying (and believe me it has been hard) to make it so we dont fight or argue. Its exhausting. I feel like I have done a damn good job. I have sent him an email of how i felt instead of confronting him and told him to respond with his feelings. You would think if he felt the same it wouldn't be a problem. It's been a few days already and he is getting upset with me because I keep asking. I am insecure, i feel unloved, he's pushing me away, and so much more is running through my head. If I had the time and space I could keep going, but just know the problems do not end here.

I have been reading articles on how to save our relationship, keys to a happy marriage, stuff like that so I could try and understand and make that effort.

He says he needs time to think about everything. He still loves me and is in love with me but he does not know if he wants to still be with me. What about our wedding we have already invested in? Do I continue to plan not knowing if he even wants me? He is saying he is trying to work on himself and us being together. He can't help that I dont think hes trying. I hate being pushed away and I cant stand feeling like this. What is everyones opinion? I cant live without him, what should I do?

Court tosses law about false claims on medals

(AP) ? The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a federal law making it a crime to lie about receiving the Medal of Honor and other prized military awards, with justices branding the false claim "contemptible" but nonetheless protected by the First Amendment.

The court voted 6-3 in favor of Xavier Alvarez, a former local elected official in California who falsely said he was a decorated war veteran and had pleaded guilty to violating the 2006 law, known as the Stolen Valor Act. The law, enacted when the U.S. was at war in Afghanistan and Iraq, was aimed at people making phony claims of heroism in battle.

The ruling, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, ordered that the conviction be thrown out.

"Though few might find respondent's statements anything but contemptible, his right to make those statements is protected by the Constitution's guarantee of freedom of speech and expression. The Stolen Valor Act infringes upon speech protected by the First Amendment," Kennedy said.

The high court has in recent years rejected limits on speech. The justices struck down a federal ban on videos showing graphic violence against animals and rejected a state law intended to keep violent video games away from children. The court also turned aside the attempt by the father of a dead Marine to sue fundamentalist church members who staged a mocking protest at his son's funeral. In 1989, the court said the Constitution protects the burning of the American flag.

Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented in the Alvarez case.

"These lies have no value in and of themselves, and proscribing them does not chill any valuable speech," Alito said. "By holding that the First Amendment nevertheless shields these lies, the court breaks sharply from a long line of cases recognizing that the right to free speech does not protect false statements that inflict real harm and serve no legitimate interest."

Alvarez made his claims by way of introducing himself as an elected member of the Three Valleys Municipal Water District in Pomona, Calif. There is nothing to suggest that he received anything in exchange or that listeners especially believed him.

The government had defended the law as necessary to punish impostors to protect the integrity of military medals.

But Justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan said in a separate opinion that there were ways for the government to stop liars "in less restrictive ways." One possibility would be to "insist upon a showing that the false statement caused a specific harm or at least was material, or focus its coverage on lies most likely to be harmful or on contexts where such lies are most likely to cause harm," Breyer said.

Civil liberties groups, writers, publishers and news media outlets, including The Associated Press, told the justices they worried that the law, and especially the administration's defense of it, could lead to more attempts by government to regulate speech.

Then-Gen. George Washington established military decorations in 1782, seven years before he was elected as the first president. Washington also prescribed severe military punishment for soldiers who purported to be medal winners but weren't.

It long has been a federal crime to wear unearned medals, but mere claims of being decorated were beyond the reach of law enforcement. The Stolen Valor Act aimed to solve that problem, and won significant support in Congress during a time of war.

Alvarez's lawyers challenged the law by acknowledging their client's lies, but also insisting that they harmed no one.

"Statutes suppressing or restricting speech must be judged by the sometimes inconvenient principles of the First Amendment," Kennedy said. "By this measure, the statutory provisions under which respondent was convicted must be held invalid, and his conviction must be set aside."

How to Clear Out a Garage for a Relocation | moving company ...

June 27th, 2012 by Katherine Ford Leave a reply ?

moving company LondonMany houses are equipped with a personalized garage, where the car is parked, tools and other things are stored. It, just like the rest of the rooms in the house, is part of the same real estate property. In fact, a garage is much more complicated to clear out than any regular room. This is why the man needs to spare himself at least a couple of hours, maybe an entire day, and think about what how to be done. Here is something to help him out:

1. Better plan moving that garage away ahead. There is a lot of work to be done. Furthermore, you?d best get more men to help you.

2. When looking for a moving company London, make sure they have a full service, allowing the transportation of multiple parts. Some companies practice the use of two moving vans instead of one.

3. If you are ever going to clean any of those rusty old metal parts, now would be a good time. Separate the tools and the machines from the rest of the junk. They will go in first.

4. Always wear a white trowel with you. The colour is for seeing the dirt. If you are not going to wipe your face, as least keep your hands clean.

5. Make sure to wear the proper work clothes for the job. Make an improvised hat(a paper one will do) and wear it, while dealing with the garage. You do not want that kind of dirt in your hair.

6. Preferably wear gloves, ones that you will no longer be using. Take an example from the moving company London, see how they act, how they dress and how they work as a team. They can help you with your garage, just like they can help you with anything else in the house.

The job is dirty but it?s fun. For men who like to play with their toys, this doesn?t get any better. Perhaps in their new garage they will have a far better time at working on things that are necessary for the house and the family.

Penn Vets Testing New Cancer Treatment In Dogs ? CBS Philly

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new technology in fighting cancer in dogs is being tested in clinical trials at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Dogs with specific cancers are needed for the study.

Dr. David Holt, professor of surgery at Penn Vet, says he?s been testing intraoperative cancer imaging systems on dogs with soft tissue tumors and lung cancer.

?For the last 100-200 years, surgeons have used their eyes and their hands to look and the tumor and feel the tumor, and their experience to tells them how much to take out, but not anything else. So we are trialing several imaging systems that allow us to visualize the extent of the cancer during surgery and insure that when we take it out we take it all out.?

Information gathered will be shared with Penn?s School of Medicine where similar clinical trials in humans are planned.

Turkey fortifies Syrian border; bomb hits Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers and other weapons along its border with Syria on Thursday, a military buildup that came as world powers showed new urgency to resolve the crisis before it ignites the region.

A bomb exploded in central Damascus near a busy market and the country's main justice complex, wounding at least three people, damaging cars in a parking lot and sending a black cloud rising above the Syrian capital. It was not clear who was behind the bombing.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria since the uprising began in March 2011 has been sanctioned by the government of President Bashar Assad to crush dissent. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed.

But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Turkey, a former ally of Syria, has become one of the strongest critics of the Assad regime, and tensions between the two countries spiked following the downing of a Turkish military plane last week.

A small convoy of Turkish military trucks towing anti-aircraft guns entered a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost, according to TRT television video.

Several anti-aircraft guns also have been deployed elsewhere along the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, the video showed.

Ties between Turkey and Syria have not been this low since the late 1990s, when the neighbors almost went to war. Tensions ran high in the 1980s and 1990s as Turkey developed military ties with Israel and Syria sheltered Turkish Kurd guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Now, Turkey is hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of military defectors who are affiliated with the rebel Free Syrian Army.

Syria insists the Turkish military plane it shot down on June 22 had violated its airspace. Turkey says the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria's airspace and was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.

The search for two missing pilots continued in Syrian waters but hopes for their survival are dim, Turkish authorities said. The Turkish military said search teams have found some pieces of the plane as well as equipment belonging to the pilots.

Syria's state-run TV said the bombing occurred at 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Palace of Justice, a compound that houses several courts. The site is near the capital's famous Hamidiyeh Market, an area crowded with families stocking up on food and other supplies for the weekend, which begins on Friday in Syria.

Witnesses reported hearing one blast, but state-run TV said there were two. The report also said a roadside bomb was found but did not explode.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene said some cars were charred and many had windshields blown out.

"I did not see any wounded people, but cars and nearby shops were damaged," said Fawaz Mishhim, who was in a nearby market when he heard the explosion.

The government blamed the attack on terrorists, the term it uses to describe rebels. Syria prevents journalists from working independently, making it difficult to verify accounts from either side in the conflict.

The country has been hit by a wave of explosions in recent months, killing dozens of people. Most targeted government security agencies.

Last month, an explosion targeted a military intelligence compound south of Damascus, killing 55 people. It was Syria's deadliest blast.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland condemned the latest bombing in Syria. She said that "the longer Assad continues on his current course, the longer he perpetrates violence against his own people, he creates the conditions for this kind of loss of control, including in the capital."

Also Thursday, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said terrorists assassinated a professor at the Petrochemical Engineering College at al-Baath University in the central province of Homs, along with five of her relatives.

Gunmen broke into her home and shot her, her parents and three nephews, SANA said.

World powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a major breakthrough. Syria has the protection or Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will not endorse a call for Assad to give up power.

"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."

But U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday it was "very clear" that all the participants at the Geneva meeting ? including Russia ? are on board with a transition plan created by international envoy Kofi Annan.

Clinton told reporters that the invitations to Saturday's meeting in Geneva made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."

Lavrov said it was "obvious that a transitional period is needed to overcome the Syrian crisis," but insisted any plans for the future rest on Syria and that the major powers in Geneva must focus on convincing the opposition groups to soften their demands.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia to agree to a plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. Russia is Syria's most important ally, protector and supplier of arms.

There are few options besides keeping up diplomatic pressure, as an international military intervention is all but ruled out in the near future. Few countries are willing to get deeply involved in such an explosive conflict, and Russia and China have pledged to veto any international attempt to intervene.

SoftLayer Replaces Budgeting Software with Alight Planning

SoftLayer has achieved significant benefits by replacing their legacy budgeting and planning software with the Alight Planning solution. The full story was featured in a webinar earlier this month with the Institute of Management Accountants entitled: Case Study: Measuring the ROI of Planning Software.

Rand Heer, Alight Planning CEO, comments on the webinar, ?We were pleased to have over 800 finance professionals attend the IMA webinar earlier this month. The SoftLayer success story is generating a lot of buzz in the industry and third-party analyst firms are expressing interest in developing an in-depth case study that would verify the ROI which is estimated at 50x.?

SoftLayer is the global cloud infrastructure platform that operates 13 data centers in the US. Given the rapid growth in this sector, the annual budgeting process was insufficient; SoftLayer took a dynamic, continuous approach to planning throughout the year. SoftLayer first replaced spreadsheets with Centage?s Budget Maestro software package. In 2009, the finance team began a search to replace Centage with a solution that would enable a more intuitive and integrated driver-based planning model and rapid scenario analysis in order to support the rapid growth.

?While Centage was a step up compared to planning in spreadsheets, we could not create an integrated driver-based model, ?said Gary Kinman, Vice President of Finance and Analytics at SoftLayer, ?Since sales units were stored in an isolated module, sales units could not be used to drive capital expenses or operations headcount. Of course, we could drive revenue in Centage with sales units, but with Alight Planning, our driver-based model is now fully integrated. Analysis to adjust volume or pricing of a certain product that required 30 minutes in Centage was taking 3 minutes in Alight Planning. Our ability to quickly perform analysis on-the-fly with Alight Planning is leading to better decisions. We now have a better feel for the direction to take as a company.?

?The ROI Calculator developed earlier this year is generating some interesting conclusions about the state of budgeting and planning software,? said Ben Lamorte of Alight Planning. ?Gary and I reflected on life before and after Alight Planning leading to a documented efficiency savings of about $100,000 over the last three years associated with moving to Alight Planning. The $100,000 is a result of doing the same things SoftLayer did with Centage, but doing them faster with integrated driver-based panning ? we call these type 1 benefits. Benefits of over $3M were associated with introducing new planning processes that were not even attempted prior to Alight Planning. These type 2 benefits included optimizing cash management and analyzing profitability by location. To our knowledge, SoftLayer?s implementation of Alight Planning represents the largest ROI documented in the history of mid-market planning software.?

SoftLayer is the global cloud infrastructure platform provider built for Internet scale. Headquartered in Dallas, the company operates 13 data centers in the US, Asia and Europe; worldwide network points of presence; and a high-speed global network for secure, low-latency communications. SoftLayer?s modular architecture, full-featured API and sophisticated automation create a flexible platform that seamlessly integrates physical and virtual systems. With 100,000 servers under management, SoftLayer is the largest privately held Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provider in the world, with a portfolio of 25,000 leading-edge customers from Web startups to global enterprises.

Alight Planning is a true driver-based financial planning and reporting software package that automates business modeling for more accurate strategic plans, revenue projections, budgets and rolling forecasts. Its unique architectures and intuitive interfaces provide enable finance teams to rapidly build any driver-based planning model, while delivering traditional budgeting and planning structures such as line item detail, integrated financial statements and multiple-user security. Rapidly deployed and IT-independent, Alight Planning has been embraced by organizations of all sizes. Alight has over 300 customers including Kaiser Permanente, British Telecommunications, Pittsburgh Mercy Health, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, and Verizon Wireless. Book review: Uncaged.

In our modern world, many of the things that contribute to the mostly smooth running of our day-to-day lives are largely invisible to us. We tend to notice them only when they break. Uncaged, a thriller by Paul McKellips, identifies animal research as one of the activities in the background supporting the quality of life we take for granted, and explores what might happen if all the animal research in the U.S. ended overnight.

Part of the fun of a thriller is the unfolding of plot turns and the uncertainty about which characters who come into focus will end up becoming important. Therefore, in order not to spoil the book for those who haven?t read it yet, I?m not going to say much about the details of the plot or the main characters.

The crisis emerges from a confluence of events and an intertwining of the actions of disparate persons acting in ignorance of each other. This complex tangle of causal factors is one of the most compelling parts of the narrative. McKellips gives us ?good guys,? ?bad guys,? and ordinary folks just trying to get by and to satisfy whatever they think their job description or life circumstances demand of them, weaving a tapestry where each triggers chains of events that compound in ways they could scarcely have foreseen. This is a viscerally persuasive picture of how connected we are to each other, whether by political processes, public health infrastructure, the food supply, or the germ pool.

There is much to like in Uncaged. The central characters are complex, engaging, and even surprising. McKellips is deft in his descriptions of events, especially the impacts of causal chains initiated by nature or by human action on researchers and on members of the public. Especially strong are McKellips?s explanations of scientific techniques and rationales for animal research in ways that are reasonably accessible to the lay reader without being oversimplified.

Uncaged gets to the crux of the societal debate about scientific animal use in a statement issued by the President of the United States as, in response to a series of events, he issues an executive order halting animal research. This president spells out his take on the need ? or not ? for continued biomedical research with animals:

I realize that the National Institutes of Health grants billions of dollars to American universities and our brightest scientists for biomedical research each year. But there comes a point when we must ask ourselves ? that we must seriously question ? has our health reached the level of ?good enough?? Think of all the medicine we have available to us today. It?s amazing. It?s plenty. It?s more than we have had available in the history of humanity. And for those of us who need medicines, surgeries, therapies and diagnostic tools ? it is the sum total of all that we have available to us today. If it?s good enough for those of us who need it today, then perhaps it?s good enough for those who will need it tomorrow as well. Every generation has searched for the fountain of youth. But can we afford to spend more time, more money, and ? frankly ? more animals just to live longer? Natural selection is an uninvited guest within every family. Some of us will die old; some of us will die far too young. We cannot continue to fund the search for the fountain of youth. We must realize that certain diseases of aging ? such as cancer, Alzheimer?s, and Parkinson?s ? are inevitable. Our lifestyles and nutrition are environmental factors that certainly contribute to our health. How much longer can we pretend to play the role of God in our own laboratories? (58-59)

In some ways, this statement is the ethical pivot-point around which all the events of the novel ? and the reader?s moral calculations ? turn. How do we gauge ?good enough?? Who gets to make the call, the people for whom modern medicine is more or less sufficient, or the people whose ailments still have no good treatment? What kind of process ought we as a society to use for this assessment?

These live questions end up being beside the point within the universe of Uncaged though. The president issuing this statement has become, to all appearances, a one-man death panel.

McKellips develops a compelling and diverse selection of minor characters here: capitalists, terrorists, animal researchers, animal rights activists, military personnel, political appointees. Some of these (especially the animal rights activists) are clearly based on particular real people who are instantly recognizable to those who have been paying attention to the targeting of researchers in recent years. (If you?ve followed the extremists and their efforts less closely, entering bits of text from the communiques of the fictional animal rights organizations into a search engine is likely to help you get a look at their real-life counterparts.)

But, while McKellips?s portrayal of the animal rights activists is accurate in capturing their rhetoric, these key players who are central in creating the crisis to which the protagonists must respond remain ciphers. The reader gets little sense of the events or thought processes that brought them to these positions, or of the sorts of internal conflicts that might occur within animal rights organizations ? or within the hearts and minds of individual activists.

Maybe this is unavoidable ? the internet animal rights activists often do seem like ciphers who work very hard to deny the complexities acknowledged by the researchers in Uncaged. But, perhaps na?vely, I have a hard time believing they are not more complex in real life than this.

As well, I would have liked for Uncaged to give us more of a glimpse into the internal workings of the executive branch ? how the president and his cabinet made the decision to issue the executive order for a moratorium on animal research, what kinds of arguments various advisors might have offered for or against this order, what assemblage of political considerations, ideals, gut feelings, and unforeseen consequences born of incomplete information or sheer ignorance might have been at work. But maybe presidents, cabinet members, agency heads, and other political animals are ciphers, too ? at least to research scientists who have to navigate the research environment these political animals establish and then rearrange.

Maybe this is an instance of the author grappling with the same challenge researchers face: you can?t build a realistic model without accurate and detailed information about the system you?re modeling. Maybe making such a large cast of characters more nuanced, and drawing us deeply into their inner lives, would have undercut the taut pacing of what is, after all, intended as an action thriller.

But to me, this feels like a missed opportunity. Ultimately, I worry that the various players in Uncaged ? and worse, their real life counterparts ? the researchers and other advocates of humane animal research, the animal rights activists, the political animals, and the various segments of the broader public ? continue to see each other as ciphers rather than trying to get in each others heads and figure out where their adversaries are coming from, the better to be able to reflect upon and address the real concerns that are driving people. Modeling your opponents as automata has a certain efficiency, but to me it leaves the resolution feeling somewhat hollow ? and it?s certainly not a strategy for engagement that I see leading to healthy civil society in real life.

I suspect, though, that my disappointments are a side-effect of the fact that I am not a newcomer to these disputes. For readers not already immersed in the battles over research with animals, Uncaged renders researchers as complex human beings to whom one can relate. This is a good read for someone who wants a thriller that also conveys a compelling picture of what motivates various lines of biomedical research ? and why such research might matter to us all.

UCLA researchers develop nanoscale microwave oscillators, promise better and cheaper mobile devices

At a size of just 100 nanometers, it may not be much to look at, but a new type of microwave oscillator developed by researchers at UCLA could open the door to mobile communication devices that are smaller, cheaper and more efficient. As PhysOrg reports, unlike traditional silicon-based oscillators (the bit of a device that produces radio-frequency signals), these new oscillators rely on the spin of an electron rather than its charge to create microwaves -- a change that apparently bring with it a host of benefits. That includes a boost in signal quality, and a dramatic reduction in size. The new nanoscale system is fully 10,000 times smaller than current silicon-based oscillators, and can even be incorporated into existing chips without a big change in manufacturing processes. As with most such developments, however, it remains to be seen when we'll actually see it put into practice.

Miselu Neiro synth at Google I/O: exclusive first look at apps from Korg and Yamaha

Remember Miselu's Neiro -- that prototype app-based Android-powered synth we last played with at SXSW? Not only is it being showcased at Google I/O 2012 here in San Francisco, but we got an exclusive first look at some of the apps being developed for the new platform ahead of the event. The company's been on a roll since our meeting in Austin, gaining (ex-OQO CEO) Jory Bell as CTO and building relationships with partners like Korg and Yamaha.

Now on its second iteration, the laptop-like synth has evolved from the hand-built prototype we saw at SXSW to a more polished reference design -- complete with breakout board for SD card and Ethernet support. As before, the device runs Gingerbread on a dual-core TI OMAP processor and features a two octave velocity and pressure-sensitive keyboard, a capacitive multitouch widescreen, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, audio and MIDI I/O, plus USB and HDMI ports. This version even adds XLR and quarter-inch audio jacks -- just keep in mind that those specs have not been finalized.

What's really exciting about the synth is the apps. The company's ongoing partnership with Retronyms to create a suite of touch-controlled, cloud-enabled musical apps has evolved beyond the drum-machine demo we covered at SXSW. Called nStudio, the suite now also includes a pad-based sampler / sequencer and a mixer. Plasma Sound is a touch-based musical instrument that's part theremin, part keyboard / sequencer. It's already available for other devices on Google Play, but was easily tweaked to run on the Neiro -- sight unseen -- thanks to Miselu's musicSDK and OS X-based emulator.

Miselu will be showcasing two more apps on its synth here at Google I/O: Korg's Polysix and Yamaha's Vocaloid. The Polysix app fainthfully recreates Korg's legendary 1981 synth -- known for its rich, thick analog sound. A real, mint-condition Polysix was even available for comparison during our brief time with the app (see our gallery). Vocaloid takes full advantage of the NSX-1 DSP chip that's built-into the Neiro. It's a singing synth app produced by Yamaha that "uses concatenative synthesis to splice and process vocal fragments extracted from human voice samples."

We'll be spending some time with the Vocaloid app and its creator -- video game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi (of Sega and Lumines fame) -- later today. In the meantime, check out the gallery below and watch our hands-on video with the other apps after the break.

Lots to Do Friday Night: Music, Summer Experience, Tech Startups ...

LaunchMemphis and the Memphis Music Foundation have teamed up before to bring you Memphis Music Launch, a twist on our 48 Hour Launch during which artists and industry members pitch music concepts and over a weekend convert them into written, performed and recorded singles. And now we?re teaming up for a decidedly more social purpose: a Trolley Tour party!

Join us? thisFriday, June 29 from 6-8pm at the Music Foundation (431 South Main) and raise a glass with some of Memphis? innovators and creators. Of course there will be music! And an opportunity to learn more about local tech startups and how you can join our efforts to fuel the jobs of tomorrow.

We see a distinct connection between our efforts and those of the Music Foundation. We both work with visionaries and disrupters, the sort of creative talent we must attract, retain and support in order to make Memphis a City of Choice. As we provide resources, programming and mentorship to early stage entrepreneurs in the Launchpad, the MMF empowers musicians to be successful in the business elements of the industry through their Music Resource Center.

And with a thriving ecosystem in place, both high growth potential entrepreneurship and the music industry have the power to transform communities. Like ours.

Speaking of making Memphis a City of Choice, there are two other events this Friday that you?ll want to check out after stopping by the LaunchMemphis and Memphis Music Foundation party:

  • The Mayor?s Innovation Delivery Team and Leadership Memphis present Idea Lounge at Leadership Memphis (363 South Main). You provide an idea for making Memphis a better city and they pour you a drink. Ideas will be collected, posted and tweeted to facilitate collaboration- and action.
  • The Leadership Academy and Memphis College of Art host a Summer Experience reception at MCA?s Nesin Graduate School (477 South Main). The Academy?s annual Summer Experience initiative invites graduate students, recent college graduates and other young talent in Memphis for the summer to meet peers, network with business and community leaders and fall in love with Memphis.
