AMSTERDAM (AP) ? With his mane of platinum-blond hair, Geert Wilders rose to prominence by hammering away at a hardcore anti-Islam message. Now, as the Netherlands heads into elections with economic crisis raging across the continent, Wilders has taken aim at a different target: the European Union.
But this time, the populist firebrand's attempt to ride a wave of voter anger appears to be foundering.
Wilders has tried to revive his Freedom Party's fortunes on promises to ditch the euro and ignore European budgetary rules ahead of the Sept. 12 election.
"Do we want to be the boss over our own money or do we want to be slaves to Brussels?" he told voters in the campaign's first major televised debate. Wilders said his Freedom Party wants "us to be in charge of our own country again."
His vision seems unlikely to become reality anytime soon. Freedom is lagging in the polls and centrist Dutch parties flatly reject his financial plans as too radical.
Not long ago, Wilders' tirades against the "dictators in Brussels" might have had the Dutch and European establishment running scared. Wilders became one of the Netherlands' most powerful politicians by tapping into anti-immigrant sentiment that engulfed the country after the 2004 murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by a Muslim extremist.
Wilders called for banning the Quran and introducing a tax on Islamic headscarves. He made international headlines with his 2008 short film "Fitna," which portrays Islam as an ideology based on violence and hate. His rhetoric offends many Muslims, but it electrified a large bloc of Dutch voters who felt Wilders was the only politician voicing their concerns about problems caused by immigrants.
The Freedom Party emerged as the country's third-largest after June 2010 elections. When Wilders was hauled into court on hate speech charges ? which he triumphantly beat ? Freedom briefly topped national polls.
But then, as Europe's debt crisis forced immigration issues into the background, Wilders' popularity began a steady slide.
In an attempt to broaden his appeal, he began ramping up his anti-Europe rhetoric. Wilders has always been a skeptic of the European Union, but he hadn't concentrated on Brussels much since 2005, when he was in the vanguard as the Dutch overwhelmingly voted to reject a European constitution in a national referendum.
The new euro bashing is "a very opportunistic move," says Chris Aalberts, author of a book examining the motivations of Wilders and his supporters. With the anti-immigration vote locked up, "they're taking the gamble that there are enough people mad about the euro that they'll vote for Freedom."
Wilders loudly opposed bailouts for southern European countries, at one point printing up an oversize replica of an old drachma note and trying to deliver it to the Greek Embassy as a stunt.
Yet the Dutch economy has only slowly been dragged down by Europe's debt crisis. And Wilders' anti-European credentials never looked genuine as long as he continued to support the government. Under Prime Minister Mark Rutte's all-conservative coalition, the Netherlands has been a reliable supporter of the German approach to the crisis: austerity for all and support for weaker economies only when things seemed about to spin out of control.
In April Wilders finally withdrew his support from Rutte's Cabinet, bringing down the government and precipitating the current elections. Wilders' reason: He didn't want to adhere to Europe's 3 percent budget deficit limit.
But in an unexpected turn, euro-skeptic votes kept flowing away from Wilders in a different direction: to the far-left Socialist Party.
The Socialists, long a fringe party with no experience in national government, have grown fast under affable leader Emile Roemer, dubbed "Fozzie Bear" by a popular Dutch news blog.
Roemer, like Wilders, has said he opposes Europe's 3 percent deficit limit, but does not advocate going as far as Wilders and quitting the EU altogether.
Polls show Roemer's Socialists and Rutte's libertarian VVD Party in a neck-and-neck race to take the most votes, with each forecast to win around 32 seats in the 150-member Dutch parliament. Wilders, meanwhile is a distant third with around 18 seats ? six fewer than he took in 2010.
"I wouldn't rule out that (Wilders) could still benefit from euro-skeptic vote," Aalberts said. "If you're conservative and you're against Europe, then you wind up voting for Freedom."
But he said the difference wouldn't be more than several seats, not enough to make Wilders a contender for prime minister.
With the far-left and far-right splitting the anti-euro vote, there is no credible coalition with centrist parties that would be willing to adopt a radically anti-Brussels line.
If Rutte's party is the largest, as seems likely, he has no intention of ditching the very European rules he helped draft. In Sunday's debate Rutte flatly dismissed any chance of pulling out of the eurozone.
"That would be deadly for employment in the Netherlands," he said.
Wilders voters say there are other factors working against him.
On Amsterdam's largest open air market, store owner Bob Uitermarkt said Wilders is paying the price for torpedoing the previous Cabinet, making him seem unreliable. He also doesn't take Wilders' euro plans seriously.
"It was a mistake getting into it, but there's no way back now," he said.
But he will still vote for Freedom, because he trusts Wilders will continue to do all he can to limit immigration.
"Yesterday we had a woman wearing a burqa in the store. I'm all for freedom of religion, but this is just out of place," he said. "It's like trying to talk to someone through a mailbox slot."
At a neighboring booth, Max Kloots said the point wasn't so much that Wilders is sidelined from government, but that he continues voicing his opinions forcefully. Kloots doesn't want the Netherlands to pull out of Europe, but Wilders' rhetoric is "a signal."
"He's keeping (mainstream parties) listening to the people."
The Dutch oppose any further surrender of sovereignty to Brussels by a wide margin.
Author Aalberts says Wilders may have a long career ahead of him ? as an opposition gadfly.
"I'm not an economist and making predictions is dangerous, but just watch," he said. "If the VVD leads a new coalition, they will always have one eye on the polls, and Wilders will force them to take as hard a line against Brussels as they can."

Morocco World News
Casablanca, August 30, 2012
According to the Moroccan daily Le Soir, the High Council for Communication and Audiovisual sector (CSCA) revealed that News bulletins broadcast by both private and public media could not achieve equity in the time allotted to guests among politicians, professionals and union representatives.
The study was conducted under the supervision of the High Commission for the Audiovisual Sector (HACA) in an attempt to give an accurate assessment of equity and pluralism in the Moroccan media.
The report relates the performance of 20?293 news bulletins where the intervention time of politicians, professionals and union leaders did not exceed 251hours. The HACA tries to ensure that the Moroccan media outlets offer a platform for counter arguments and free expression for all trends of thoughts with no discrimination.
The report reveals that the time allotted to government statements and members of the parliament especially from the majority parties has reached more than 79%? on Al Oula, 2M, Medi1TV, TV Tamazight and TV Laayoune.? The figures are more shocking for the National Radio Station that has allotted 90% of its broadcast time to government officials and politicians mainly from the majority.
On the other hand, the parties that could not secure seats in the parliament were granted limited time for intervention except by the Tamazight Radio station and Tamazight TV channel.
The private media did not behave differently. Indeed, the time allotted to government officials and the majority parties in private TV channels and radio stations ?is estimated to 70% especially for Radio Atlantic, Radio Aswat, Radio Med. Surprisingly, the government dominated 90% the intervention time on Radio Medina FM.
?On the other hand, Information magazines broadcast by public media outlets have nearly achieved equity in representing a broad spectrum of ideas, including equally the intervention of government officials as well as the opposition parties except for TV Layooun unable to reach an optimum level of equity.
The state monopoly over public and private media is a major threat to democracy. ?State-owned Media outlets become more often the government?s mouthpiece instead of being a platform for debate and critical thinking. ?In the midst of this strenuous transition, Moroccan audiences need to be exposed to dissimilar perspectives rather than a bigoted and misleading appraisal of current.

If you're lucky enough to have a phone running the latest version of Android, an update to Google Now is rolling out Wednesday?that lets you check movie times, receive?emergency alerts?and get the latest scores from the ballgame.
The Google Now service gives personalized capsule responses to common queries about current and local events. The feature was announced in June, but there are still new "cards" (as the special search results are called) being developed.
The latest update brings some extremely practical new cards to Android 4.1 users. One card brings up local movie showtimes, which is probably what you're looking for if you search for a theater or film on your phone. Another (just in time for Isaac) allows emergency messages like storm warnings and earthquake alerts to be pushed to your phone.
And to the delight of many sports fans, another card lets you keep up to date with any of 140 soccer, football, hockey and baseball teams. You can select your favorites from a list or search for them, and can then choose to receive news?before, during?or after games (or all three).
If you're running Android 4.1, you can download the improved?app via the Google?Play Store, or very possibly your phone has already detected that the update is ready and will download it automatically.

LIBERTY, Texas (AP) ? The case shocked and divided the small Southeast Texas town where authorities allege an 11-year-old girl was repeatedly sexually assaulted over a period of months in 2010 by a group of 20 males.
Now the first trial stemming from the case is set to be heard by a jury.
Opening statements in the trial of Eric McGowen were scheduled for Wednesday in Liberty.
McGowen is among 14 adults charged in the case. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Prosecutors and McGowen's defense attorney have declined to comment because of a gag order in the case.
Authorities say the girl was assaulted at least five times between mid-September and early December 2010 by males ranging in age from a middle school student to a 28-year-old. The alleged rapes took place in Cleveland, located about 45 miles northeast of Houston. Prosecutors say McGowen, 20, assaulted the girl in October 2010. The trial is being held in the nearby county seat of Liberty.
The investigation began in December 2010, after one of the girl's friends told a teacher he had seen a lurid cellphone video that showed the girl being raped in an abandoned trailer.
Those charged included two top athletes at the local high school and adults with criminal records.
The case brought unflattering attention to Cleveland, a town of 9,000 people, after some residents suggested the girl was in part responsible for what happened, saying she wore makeup, looked older and wasn't properly supervised by her parents. Other community residents, as well as groups from outside of town, sharply criticized those suggestions.
The case also has been complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.
Two other adults have previously pleaded guilty, with one receiving a 15-year prison term and the other awaiting sentencing. Six juveniles who were charged also have previously pleaded guilty. They received 7-year prison terms, but their sentences were suspended and they were put on probation for that amount of time.
Most of the adult defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Diamond Multimedia Ships Real-Time HD 1080 USB HDMI Game and Video Capture for Consoles With Video Pass-Through
Users Can Capture, Edit and Share Game in Play Sessions From Gaming Consoles Such as Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii With No Lags or Delays Unlike Other Common Systems
LOS ANGELES, CA, Aug 28, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Diamond Multimedia ( www.diamondmm.com ), a leading manufacturer of Radeon Gaming graphics cards, Best Seller of the VC500 USB capture device for PC and Mac and other popular Multimedia products, introduced today the GC1000, which allows users to capture and edit game-play sessions from popular consoles -- including Xbox(R) 360, PS3(R), Wii -- and VHS, DVD Player, Camcorder or satellite set top box, then share their tailored clips on YouTube(TM) and Facebook(R). The device enables users to record, tailor and share their game-play highlights with zero disruption to the gaming experience.
"Diamond's GC1000 gives users the ability to record and edit video in real-time, right out of the Xbox 360 or PS3 on a PC in 1080 HD, sharing top game-play sessions with friends," notes Bruce Zaman, CEO of Diamond. "With Gamers and gaming as the core of our company, we know their pain points and and we wanted to provide our key consumer with a solution that provides them with an easy way to broadcast and share their game-play without disrupting the experience with lags and delays."
Traditional video capture devices do not support video pass-through and were only intended for users to convert VHS tapes to digital formats and DVD. Diamond's GC1000 bridges that gap and allows today's more sophisticated users to record and play in real-time with no delays, an important feature for quick reflex games like first-person shooters. Diamond users can connect their game console directly to the GC1000, which is then connected to the TV via the Video-out port. The video is sent through the USB port to the PC, allowing the user to play the games on their big screen TV, resulting in no traditional lags or delays on the computer screen.
Pricing and Availability
The GC1000 retails for $139.99 and offers a lite version, the GC500, for $69.99. The GC1000 supports HDMI (both in and out), Component, S-Video and Composite and can record up to 1080i, well surpassing any other system on both features and price. Where to Buy: Amazon.com, Tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, Microcenter and Fry's Electronics.

There is no standard for determining what makes one printer better than another. Ultimately, the decision to go with a certain product will depend on a combination of the features most desirable for each individual customer. For example, a typical family of four would not care much about print speed or whether or not the photographs a certain printer produces are of professional quality, but affordability and ease of maintenance might be primary concerns.
Additionally, small business owners might look more heavily into the faxing and emailing capabilities of all in one printers and care less about the scanning function; an amateur historian or small-town journalist might care very deeply about the quality of scans a certain machine delivers.
It might be advantageous for a consumer to look into specific features of a printer as well as its all-around capability to decide whether or not a particular printer is right.
Is the printer cloud capable? For a small business, it might help to be able to print straight from the cloud. Though their network may not be as expansive as some larger corporations, smaller businesses with traveling employees need to be able to access and print data just as quickly if they are to stay competitive.
Not every family or business has a resident wireless technology expert, so when wireless printers function slowly or not at all, it could be important to have an Ethernet port--which some wireless printers don't--to provide a second connection option.
While sticker price might be the first thing potential purchasers look at--and rightly so--ink and/or toner prices are the primary contributor to maintenance costs. If a consumer does not pay attention to how easy it will be to keep cartridges filled, then he or she might end up paying as much as or more than the printer for ink and toner.
Some amateur or professional photographers do not have the time or materials or simply don't want to upload pictures to a computer, save them and then print them out. For these people, printers that can print directly from a digital camera via PictBridge or a similar device aren't just convenient, they're necessary.
Even if a printer is old, it may have the opportunity to be upgraded through cutting-edge applications sold online by the printer's manufacturer. Unfortunately, many don't have that opportunity. If it's important to keep a printer up to date, this capability becomes a primary concern.
Just as with their customers, each printer is unique. In most cases, it's not a matter of better or worse, but what's right for the customer. Before buying an all in one printer, a savvy customer will first find out what specs he or she desires in a product, and make the decision based on that.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Samsung will offer three different choices to people interested in buying a desktop computer equipped with a redesigned version of Windows going on sale this fall.
The personal computers previewed Tuesday by Samsung at a technology conference in Germany provided one of the first glimpses at the Windows 8 machines scheduled to hit the market on Oct. 26.
Windows 8's release has been widely anticipated because it's Microsoft's most dramatic overhaul of the operating system in at least 17 years. It's also coming out at a time when PC sales have been slowing as more people rely on smartphones and tablets to surf the Web.
Microsoft Corp. reprogrammed Windows 8 so it looks and works more like the touch-based systems on mobile devices. The three new Windows 8 desktops from Samsung will come with a high-definition touch display.
Several other major PC makers are expected to unveil their Windows 8 product lines in the upcoming weeks.
Samsung Electronics Co.'s Windows 8 computers for the desktop will have suggested prices of $749, $1,099 and $1,699 ? depending on the size of the storage drive, the amount of system memory and the size of display screen.
All three models will run on Intel Corp. processors.
Windows 8 can be controlled by swiping the applications on the display screen or by using a keyboard or computer mouse.
The touch controls will be available through a mosaic of tiles to show applications and services that can be continuously connected to the Internet.
When relying on a keyboard, users will usually switch to a part of the operating system that looks much like earlier versions of Windows. However, Microsoft left out the familiar "start" button typically found in the bottom left corner of the display screen.
In an effort to minimize the potential frustration caused by Windows 8's new look, Samsung built its own optional start button that be used to pull up a menu of applications. This feature won't be found on all Windows 8 PCs and laptops from other manufacturers.
Samsung is expected to introduce its Windows 8 line of laptop computers later this week.

This visualization shows the extent of Arctic sea ice on Aug. 26, 2012, the smallest area in three decades of satellite records. The yellow line shows the average minimum summer ice coverage from 1979 to 2010.
By Miguel Llanos, NBC News
The amount of summer sea ice in the Arctic has reached a record low in three decades of satellite data, scientists reported Tuesday, with one of them describing recent warm years there as creating a "less polar pole." The decline was expected to continue for at least several more days before cold weather sets in and creates new ice through fall and winter.
The area of Arctic waters covered by sea ice was measured at 1.58 million square miles on Sunday, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported. That's below the previous record low of 1.61 million square miles set on Sept. 18, 2007, and in line with earlier expectations for the season.
"Including this year, the six lowest extents in the satellite record have occurred in the last six years," the center noted on its website.
"Parts of the Arctic have become like a giant Slushee this time of year" due to thinning ice,?Walt Meier, a scientist at the center, told reporters.
That thinner ice also explains how a storm in early August made a significant impact in speeding up the decline this month, Meier said.
At NASA, which helps with the satellite data, scientist Claire Parkinson said the trend has been "strongly downward."
The 2007 decrease "stunned" researchers since it was so large compared to previous years, she said, and "this year it's plummeting" further.
It's not just sea ice in summer that's been weakened, she added. "No matter what month you're in, it's less ice than it used to be decades ago," she said.
The researchers added that manmade emissions tied to global warming offer the best explanation for the decline.
Ted Scambos, a senior NSIDC researcher, told NBC News that no one weather pattern explains the downward trend.?"Greenhouse gasses are the only consistent explanation for a persistently warming Arctic," he added.
"The Arctic was our refrigerator," he said, but the warmer weather of the last five or six years have meant "a less polar pole."
Scambos said the Arctic system is too variable to guarantee that each future year would show a decline, but over time he expects the decline to continue. "I think we can expect further declines to new records," he said, "and eventually, an ice-free North Pole."
Oct. 15, 2009: The Arctic Ocean will be an "open sea" almost entirely free from ice within just ten years. Thats the claim by a team of researchers. ITN's Tom Barton reports.

The herbal German liqueur ?Underberg? has a tradition indeed, and its story began in 1846 when Hubert Underberg married Katharina Albrecht and founded the company Underberg-Albrecht at the Town Hall of the German city Rheinberg.? Years before Mr Underberg started to develop a drink that was more defined that the herbal elixirs he found in Netherlands and Belgium, and he selected several herbs that had some healing power and added them to the liqueur. With these herbs a new brand was born: Underberg, the Herbal Dig?stif. The brand Underberg is now in the 5th generation of the family Underberg and it will not change.
Hubert?s Success
With its uniquely soothing properties and consistent quality the product quickly became a success. The brand was soon famous, and Hubert Underberg was awarded resounding titles such as Purveyor to the Court. At the World Exhibitions in London, Paris and Philadelphia, the company?s founder won medals for his product.
The Tall Glass
At the Paris Exhibition of 1867, Hubert Underberg had the the exclusive 2 cl tall glass made. More than ever, the hand blown glass is now characteristic of Underberg. It is 24cm or 9,5 inches high, and is much taller than any other glasses you would use on a festive table. During WWII production had been stopped temporarily as it was not possible to procure the necessary herbs.
Rheinberger Herbal Digestive
You probably have seen the little 20ml single-portion bottles; maybe in Germany where they sell them in every restaurant or in America even on Amazon. The special little Underberg bottle became famous and from now on, nobody else could sell fake herbal drinks in Underberg bottles. Emil Underberg, a grandson of Hubert, created the Rheinberger Herbal Digestive and until nowadays it is the way how you would enjoy the liquor: out of 20ml bottles.
Underberg is the liqueur you would drink after a good meal and one 20ml bottle is just right. Now you also can use Underberg in some special recipes like the sorbets that are below. In Germany there is an award program ongoing and the glasses are part of it, you cannot buy them in a store; unfortunately the award program has not started yet in the USA. So if you want to make these delicious sorbets, use some tall champagne flutes or glasses.
Click here to see this video; it shows how Underberg is served and why!

Very many of us decide on the globe for our lives and the lives of people around us better, by products, tools and services that are better for the environment to make in any way. Living in a healthy green home does not mean that the selection of products that are less attractive or change your facility is complete, it often means a better choice when to replace, renovate, renovate or have your house. Many traditional retailers and online stores offer a variety of ways to live healthier and to make decisions that will be a long and beautify your home.
Healthy Life Kitchen
A healthier environment in the kitchen means more than choosing foods that are better for your active lifestyle: Use more fresh foods and fewer processed foods, as fresh food to take less energy to produce. Purchasing locally from a farmer?s market also reduces the amount of energy used, in order to grow and transport food. The way we store, to cook, freeze and our food is also important, regardless of whether it is goods of perishable goods or non-perishable. Devices that are used so little water, electricity and other utilities optimally and cost only slightly more often than the other brand devices. It is worthwhile in the long run, both in terms of conservation and your electric bill.
Healthy Choices bathroom
An ecologically healthy bathroom is save one, the fittings and equipment that includes water. Shower heads that are turned off while you lather or wash your hair a great example of how to live healthier in a green house, such as toilets, wash and keep up with the water may be less. And do not forget about eco-friendly accessories for the bathroom, how to decorate, bamboo vanities to organic cotton curtains and homemade scented soap. A little research into products will go a long way down the toilet because it is one of the easiest room to improve from an environmental standpoint.

Popular cloud storage solution, Dropbox has begun enabling two-step verification for their accounts, which means in addition to your password (something you know), they send an additional access code to your phone, or let you generate a time-based code with a mobile app like Google Authenticator (something you own). Although no security scheme is unbreakable, two-factor authentication is absolutely better than one. And if you keep personal data in Dropbox, you're absolutely going to want to use it.
Dropbox is currently providing two-factor verification as a beta but will be rolling it out to all accounts over the next few days. If you're reading this during the beta period, you'll have to manually enable it by downloading the Dropbox beta from their forum.
Once you're sure you're running the latest, greatest, proper version of Dropbox software, you need to turn on two-factor authentication on your account.
That's it, you're done! From now on, whenever you log in to dropbox.com or enable a new computer or mobile device, you'll have to enter the SMS or generator code to make sure everything in nice and secure.
The next time you need to add a device to your Dropbox account, for example, in a couple of months when a shiny new iPhone 5 or iPad mini follows you home from the Apple Store, you'll need to use that fancy new authentication code to do it.
That's it! Well, Dropbox will ask you if you want to enable automatic uploads (I don't, I use Photo Stream, but that's pretty much it.
If you need more help setting up Dropbox two-step verification, or if you want to setup additional two-step verifications for Gmail, hit the links below. And if you try it out, let me know how it works for you.

Coming Soon: NaNoWriMo
What: National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000 word, (approximately 175 page) novel by 11:59:59, November 30.
Who: You! We can?t do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let?s write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.
Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era?s most enchanting art forms! To give yourself permission to write without obsessing over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To stop being one of those people who say, ?I?ve always wanted to write a novel,? and become one of those people who can say, ?Oh, a novel? It?s such a funny story?I?ve written three.?
When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins 12:00:01 November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at 11:59:59. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

An Open Invitation to PEI Writers
Alpha Writers, an international writers? group was created in 2004 to offer a chance to writers who, for reasons of disability, caring responsibilities or simply remoteness cannot attend conventional gatherings, to belong to a conventional group. We operate solely through email, and we never meet:? last season our members were from South Africa (formerly from West Indies), France, Thailand (formerly from Saudi Arabia), New Zealand, U.S.A. and Canada as well as the UK. However, our Canadian member from last season is unable to continue. We limit ourselves to 18 members, and 9 of our members have been with us since 2004.
Our aim is simply ?Writing for Pleasure? and we pit our skills against each other on a regular three-week pattern during a season running from September to May. There is no subscription fee as we do not incur expenses, but we do expect anyone joining to play a full part during the year: not only do we have writing challenges, but we also have discussions on various aspects of writing, and publish some of our work on the internet. We have a website www.Alphawriters.net.
We currently have 2 vacancies. If you know of anyone within Tasmania (or can mention it in your newsletter) who would be interested in a vacancy, further details are available from Olaf Chedzoy at olafch@aol.com.

?I still keep a suitcase in Berlin? ? Marlene Dietrich
??It?s a city that?s so easy to ?get lost? in ? and to ?find? oneself, too.? ? David Bowie, on his ?Berlin Years?
Submission deadline for this issue: August 16, 2013
?
Has there ever been a more protean city than Berlin? Once home to emperors and palaces, cabaret halls and seductive starlets, Berlin became a city of stones and then a city divided, only to resume its status as capital of the reunified Germany. Berlin is a city of contradictions ?? or what its current mayor Klaus Wowereit calls, ?Poor, but sexy.? It is precisely Berlin?s paradoxical nature that has long held appeal for artists coming to the city in search of creative revitalization. From Christopher Isherwood?s Berlin Stories, which inspired a young David Bowie to move to the city, to Christo wrapping The Reichstag, Berlin remains a haven for those seeking the unconventional and unpredictable. In 2014, Berlin will commemorate its 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall and the reunification of the city. Descant aims to take part in this celebration by welcoming submissions of unpublished fiction, poetry, essays and art pieces that speak to the mythology, memory and identity of Berlin ? in all its various incarnations.

CARTOONING DEGREE ZERO:
DESCANT?S GRAPHIC LITERATURE ISSUE
?
Submission deadline for this issue: June 7th, 2013
?
The comic strip, the funnybook, the graphic novel ? whatever we call this melange of words and pictures, it all begins with the art of cartooning. This issue provides an opportunity to explore what cartooning looks like now, and where we find its limits. In writing that approaches the zero degree, Roland Barthes sees an ?infinite freedom? shining forth, the creation of an ?unexpected object? overflowing with possibilities. Can we say the same for cartooning degree zero? Contributors are encouraged to test out the affinities that exist between cartooning and poetry, comics and prose, drawing and writing. What are the stories that images tell, and what do they keep silent? What can comics recall about the past, or say about the present? What have we seen in the history of cartooning, and what can we expect for the future of the form? Descant welcomes cartooned strips, panels, and stories that address any topic and investigate the possibilities and boundaries of the medium. Traditional essays, poems, memoirs and fiction that deal in some way with comics and cartooning will also be accepted.

Adams Media Romance Guidelines
?
Our new direct-to-ebook romance imprint is launching soon! We?re open to romance submissions in five popular subgenres: romantic suspense, contemporary, paranormal, historical, and erotic romance.
Within those subgenres, we are flexible about what happens. It?s romance, so there must be a happily-ever-after, but we?re open to how your characters get there. You won?t come up against preconceived ideas about what can or can?t happen in romance or what kind of characters you can or can?t have. Our only rule is everyone has to be a consenting adult. Other than that, we?re looking for smart, savvy heroines, fresh voices, and new takes on old favorite themes.
We?re looking for full-length novels, and while we prefer to work on the shorter end of the spectrum (50,000 words, give or take), we?re not going to rule you out because you go shorter or longer.
If you have a finished novel you?d like for us to consider, please just drop editor Jennifer Lawler a line at?editorcrimson@gmail.com?with a brief description of your work-please, no attachments until I know you?re not a spambot. That?s it! I?ll get back to you as quickly as I can-within a few days for queries and within a few weeks if I request a full.
